Excited to Die: Do you keep backup characters?

Not really. I have concepts that float around in my head, but I don't bother to flesh them out until I have to. Also, I find that the less I plan long-term and the more that I follow spontaneous inspiration, the more I enjoy a character I've created.

A very reluctant question: how does one have fun with the Book of Exalted Deeds?

I think that the average life expectancy of an exalted character in Ravenloft is about 0.05 seconds. Darklord (holding head): Ouch! My head is killing me! What's going on? Toady: There's a celestial servant of heaven in the realm, sire. Darklord: Grrr. Excuse me. (he teleports) Five...

Does a publisher/author's interaction here influence your purchases?

If James Wyatt had a hand in writing it, I will usually give it a look. He wrote my two favorite 3E books--Oriental Adventures and Book of Exalted Deeds.

    Elvis person or Beatles person?

Says the Londoner! Tragic, man. Tragic.

    Elvis person or Beatles person?

Me too. I like the Fab Four, too, but the King is...well, the King.

    Let's hook up

When did this phrase change from meaning "Let's hang out" to "Let's have sex?" Sometime recently within the American cultural tableau, "Let's hook up," "We hooked up," and "I hooked up wit Amy last night" now only connote sexual encounters, and I'm pissed because nobody told me until I...

[Eberron]The Lord of Blades is Dead!

Since we're on the topic--has anyone else drawn a mental parallel between the warforged (Khorvaire's cast-off children, who some claim are without souls) and Battlestar Galactica's Cylons (humanity's cast-off children, who humans claim have software, not souls)?

A very reluctant question: how does one have fun with the Book of Exalted Deeds?

Your group needs to be onboard with the idea. Simple as that. If they are not mature enough to see it as a role-play opportunity for the group instead of a straightjacket for their hedonism, then save yourself the headache and file away that exalted character concept for the right game. In any...

[Eberron]The Lord of Blades is Dead!

In standard Eberron, there would be very little negative fallout regarding this victory, and probably little interest overall. Most warforged will be pleased that he is defeated, since the Lord of Blades was generally seen as a troubling reminder of the divisiveness that they are, by and large...

AC of your 10th lvl character?

Does the Heavy Armor Optimization feat allow the character to retain her full Dex bonus in full plate?

AC of your 10th lvl character?

At 10th my dwarf barbarian/fighter had +2 dwarven full plate, a +2 ring of protection, and a +1 amulet of natural armor. With an 8 Dex, his AC was 22. When he entered a whirling frenzy (rage variant from Unearthed Arcana), his AC increased to 24. If needed, he could activate his bracers of...

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

Actually, we're all in agreement. My point still stands--there are a lot more bright shiny objects in 3E with which to be distracted away from the story.

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

I think the issue is that a lot of us get wrapped up in the robust mechanics of 3E to the point that we forget or worse, forego, story in favor of crunchy characters. I don't recall this as being as much of an issue in previous editions (I admit that I could be wearing rose-colored glasses here.)

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

Don't get me wrong. I love 3E. I just want the mechanics to serve the story, not the other way around. A lot of this is how a group chooses to approach the game.

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

I agree that it's largely mental; however, there is also a much higher expectation these days that a DM will always follow the RAW, and my groups seem to see it as much more of an issue in 3E when I don't. In past editions, DMs were expected to use a ton of house rules. I never caught guff about...

3rd Edition Rules, 2nd Edition Feel?

I must admit that I felt far less constrained by the game mechanics back in 2nd edition. Now I feel like if it's not in the rulebooks, I shouldn't do it; or alternately, if I want to do it I need to find a spell/feat/template/etc. combo that works, rather than handwaving something as magic and...
