Unintended(?) Consequence of No More X-Mas Tree?

So...uhm...we basically agree, is that it? :) D&D magic =/= literary magic (where fantasy literature excludes D&D novels). By the way, I have to correct myself a little. What I said in my post above, about 3E being relatively easy to "cut down" for a low-magic game, creates first a "rare magic"...

Once you go C&C, you never go back

I think we should distinguish between two kinds of "complete RPG" descriptions. One kind of complete RPG is the one where the system as presented can do everything the designers set out to accomplish with it. Personally, I think C&C manages that quite well. The other kind of complete RPG is...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

Not before you finished your gamma-ray treatment, grow to 3 meters, green skin, and wear ripped purple shorts. Nah, seriously..I guess there's some generalization going on in that post, going from It sounds to me like he's saying that he doesn't believe the motifs they use for 4E will...

Unintended(?) Consequence of No More X-Mas Tree?

Agreed...just that, in most literature, spellcasters are not limited to "per day" effects the way wizards were in all editions of D&D so far, or even memorization. They usually have their array of spells at hand and can cast them when they need them. In stories like that, magical items either...

Unintended(?) Consequence of No More X-Mas Tree?

Oh, I agree, there's plenty of ways how to make magical items less important, and still keep the characters from becoming "magical superheroes". But considering that the chosen way to keep wizards from being scroll/wand dependant for more spells/day is to give them more powers that come "per...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

Looking for a way to read this in a better light? Want some help? :) Try reading it like this... "From my point of view, the way 4E is promoted serves to easily bring kids on board as new gamers, but doesn't look like it is made with keeping them in the game for the next 20+ years as well."...

OK, we're gettng a little annoyed here!

Folks, I'm not sure it's a good idea to start that kind of argument in the exact thread Morrus started to remind us all to keep it a little more calm and peaceful, knowhutamsayin? :)

Unintended(?) Consequence of No More X-Mas Tree?

I don't know about you, but I'd not view a game that gets rid of the dependancy on magic items by integrating more effects right into the character classes as good at providing a "low-magic experience", really. Making characters intrinsically more powerful in order to keep them from depending on...

    AD&D Style Multilassing

I'd guess "concept" leans more towards the storytelling reasons why a character might have multiple classes in his portfolio, while "build" leans more toward the number-crunching reasons. At least that's the vibe I am getting from Reynard here. :) Might be wrong, though. He probably will...

OK, we're gettng a little annoyed here!

l've got to be honest and say that, in my opinion, the mod squad is already doing their moderation the best way. Anything more obtrusive would probably drive away a part of the regular posters who don't like police state mentality on their message board, and anything less would let the 4E forum...

    D&D 4E Positive Aspects of 4E

What I like about what I heard from the 4E peeks so far...hmmm, lets see. - The strengthening of class roles. That's one good thing to make it easier for new players to grasp what their class is their for. It creates archetypes that are recognizable. They may not be the same archetypes that...

    Are Gognards killing D&D?

A few thoughts that went through my head while reading this thread... What is D&D, and how can you kill it? Is basic D&D dead? AD&D 1E? 2E? Or even OD&D (the "one true game" ;) )? I'd argue they are very much alive, since they all are still widely in use, and played by many groups. In the...

    D&D 4E 4e - Too much change?

I was going to add that, too, but then I was in doubt about one thing...their announcement that "high levels will play like low levels" in 4E. Now I'm not sure if they talk about WHAT is played at high levels (dungeon crawls of epic proportions?) or how it is played (rules and numbers working...

    D&D 4E 4e - Too much change?

Well, I see quite a few elements of BECMI D&D in the announcements so far. - Points of Light concept has been a strong element in the old Basic and Expert Set, down to Karameikos as a Duchy with "vast" amounts of wilderness and a few, fortified settlements outside the capitol. - The dichotomy...

    Give me choices!

Not to bothered about the whole gnomes thing (I guess somebody who simply stays in Mystara for generic D&D can't be bothered too much about some races being added or subtracted with every new edition  ), but I just wanted to point out that, while every demi-human race back in Basic D&D had...

    D&D 4E 4e - Too much change?

Yep, and I'm not happy about it either, but that only means WotC (and other 4E publishers) won't see any of my money from that point on. Of course, it probably also means I can kiss the hopes of finding new D&D players pretty much good-bye here. :\ Remains to be seen, though.

Making big fights with weak monsters fun.

One thing Piratecat already mentioned is to go into some more detail about HOW they actually are trying to do damage to the characters...basically, a zombie is trying to munch on his victim (doesn't have to be the brains, even), and telling a player "As your fighter pulls his arm back, the dents...

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Uh-oh, it's a good sign that this forum has gone far down the bad path when the official Board Optimist starts handing out sarcastic comments without even a smilie attached. :uhoh:

Races & Classes details from the WotC boards

I like what I read in there about the Warlocks...sounds like a damn flavourful class, and loaded with plenty of different options depending on whom they started making deals with. :) I wonder how much it will take to translate it back to something 3E-ish.

New Design & Development: Paladin Smites!

Nope, it simply suggests I don't percieve the necessity to dial up the resolution in my description in order to take all possible scenarios of why the attacker failed to do damage into account. Splicing it up into "your hit simply missed outright", "the target moved out of the way fast enough"...
