why not getting rid of coup de grace?

I think coup de grace is in the game to give a quantifiable rule to the usual "in certain situations, a dagger through the eye means a dead character" notes that pop up in games that use hit point systems for their main characters, to circumvent the "I have to stab the bound prisoner repeatedly...

    Arcane Dart - Opinions?

Yeah, but the "auto-hit everything" capacity might be a bit much..and you'd NEVER have an unarmed wizard, even if you managed to get every other PC away from his weapons (imprisoned PCs scenario, for example, or a prominent costume ball). Don't try to think in combat terms alone, that's too...

Players, DMs and Save or Die

Honestly, I'd be surprised if they haven't put some sort of save-or-die-like effect in 4E as well, but it will probably work with in a way that will be more palatable to you and the rest of the roughly 66% of the voters that are against save-or-die. At least I hope they will, since it seems to...

Players, DMs and Save or Die

Sorry, fair? Define fair first, please. And to whom that fairness is supposed to apply. :) You say those effects are fine at epic levels...others make a lot of noise about an epic level still being threatened by a 9th level cleric. Sometimes, fair is a matter of taste. ;)

    D&D 4E Paizo and 4e.

Hmmm, tell that to the mods who ban posters for exactly those things. ;) I bet they will disagree.

 Or L5R, where exploding damage dice can make a sword stroke cause 72 points of damage, which will kill every samurai with one hit.

    Arcane Dart - Opinions?

Hmmm, this is the kind of pondering that can come out of productive rules discussions, yep. :D I was thinking on giving Magic Missile a duration of 10 minutes/level, allow one missile/round as a ranged touch attack causing 1d4+1 points of damage. Would tie up a spell slot, though, and not last...

    Am I being unreasonable?

Take a validation point from here. You got a good reason to look into the TWF rules again (new player with that concept), you noticed an irregularity and brought it up, and any dust being kicked up now hints at the player not really being cooperative with you trying to put the rules to work. Or...

    D&D 4E Paizo and 4e.

The other side of the same coin (adventure creation) would be how well 4E lends itself to be improvised with on the spot. I'm not much for long preparing sessions where stats are concerned, and every time I sat down to stat out an important NPC in 3E I had to struggle not to fall asleep after 20...

    D&D 3.x A message to the 3.5ers

Yeah, I have to agree with Eric here. If there is one thing that 4E definitely is to blame for, it is me suddenly starting to use my Ignore list, and adding people to it on a weekly base, from all sides of the fence. And from what it looks like, it won't get much better before the first Core...

Players, DMs and Save or Die

And then some mods remind us to not continue with cyclic arguments...I'd suggest you read back this thread, and the other one about the same topic, if you really want to know my take on that question. :) If, on the other hand, all you wanted to express was an opinion that any encounter, be it...

Players, DMs and Save or Die

Nope, that's why you use a monster with a save-or-die effect not the same way you use something like a simple stone giant. :) By the way, we're again in that cycle of "save-or-die not being equivalent to melee damage output" and all the follow-up arguments that come with it. Wouldn't you agree...

    D&D 3.x A message to the 3.5ers

I'm not going to switch to 4E as my game of choice. Yet I am here, discussing rules, rule changes, and the concepts behind rules and rules changes. Why? Because I'm interested in broadening my understanding of it all in the context of D&D...every edition of it. I have rules material for every...

Damn nice idea! Worth a lot of pondering over. :D

Players, DMs and Save or Die

Okay, thanks for the explanation. :) So basically it's a question of what assumptions the campaign setting is built upon. I've got to say, "points of light" gives me the hope that the DMG demographics section might have gotten a little more notice this time. :)

    D&D 3.x A message to the 3.5ers

Heh, great, so there's a thread here asking those whose posts have no other content than their opinion on 4E to stop posting here if that opinion is a negative one. Why not extend it to those whose posts have no other content than their opinion on 4E period? ;) Could be we'll be seeing...

Okay, care to elaborate on that one? I'm really curious what you mean with that. :)

Players, DMs and Save or Die

It's usually scattered in one or two posts among a lot of heated arguments in the respective threads about one single topic. But yeah, to me 4E does have points where it reminds me of older "classical" editions. I mean...I could even try to stretch the whole "less material components, more...

    Player Revolt

Once, in a Shadowrun 1E game. 1) Our GM wanted us to invade a high-security arcology outside of Seattle...a pyramid with a 3x3 km base and 3 km height...completely self-sufficient, constantly guarded by all kinds of nastiness mundane and magical, only accessible through the tip with freigh...
