D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Thats because the DM didnt pull them up on their murder-hoboing. They only whine when you call them out on it. Let it happen and they have no reason to whine. Id call them out on it the instant it happened (and would also be quite firm in session zero, not to even try).

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

What are the consequences if you were to punch a member of the Mafia, a street Gangster, an elected Politician, a Police officer or similar in real life? What on earth do you think happens to a PC after the murder a member of the local Thieves guild, a Lord or a member of the town guard in...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

No it's not meaningless. There are multiple game effects that key to alignment, plus it's cosmically - in game - relevant (where they go on death). In my games, mass murders are not Good aligned. Feel free to run it otherwise in yours. I have tons of players. Just no whiny murder-hobos. They...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

What are you on about? If your PCs murder the local Prince, you'll face consequences for that action (his family will seek to hunt you down and kill you). If your PCs save the life of the local Prince, you'll also face consequences for that action (they'll reward you richly and owe you a...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Why? What if that's the logical consequence of their actions? Assume your PCs murder the nephew of the local Lord, or a powerful Priest of Bane, or the head of a local crime family, or a member of a very wealthy merchant family, or even just a number of random commoners in Baldurs Gate...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

Did you miss the bit where that's exactly what I said? There was no false choice. I made it perfectly clear that 'random repeated acts of murder' are not the sorts of things good aligned PCs do (a discussion that is also had at session zero BTW). If the 'good aligned' PC persists anyway, his...

D&D General Fighting Law and Order

If you have good aligned PCs acting like Ted Bundy and murdering everyone left right and centre, you have bigger problems. Id simply tell them 'No'. Then discuss what 'good aligned' means. If they tried again even after having that chat, I'd let them, change their alignment to 'Evil' and have...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

And I'd have no problem if someone didnt want to play that way, and instead wanted to spend 10 minutes faffing about. They can just do it at another table. The Angry DM expects actions announced instantly: How to Manage Combat Like a Motherf$&%ing Dolphin I've gotta say, I agree with him...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

Mentioned that multiple times already. New players get pauses, and explanations of the rules, and their class features. Even suggestions for how to best use them (Steve, Cunning action allows you to either X/Y or Z. It uses your bonus action for that turn. In addition, you can also use your...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

DM: Too late, roll your attack. Not at all! The monsters are under the same constrains as the players are. I take my turns snappy, subject to what the monsters know and would do. Dumb ogre swings club at biggest obvious threat. Mindflayer tries to eat the Arcane casters brain, because it's...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

They get six seconds to start talking. Not to finish speaking, roll all dice etc. And before you try and run some kind of argument that the player might filibuster, if they're mucking about, 'dodge action and turn ends' is always an option. Be snappy with your turns. Take too long, and you...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

Firstly, that's a feature and not a bug. I prefer to simulate the urgency and chaos of combat, and not run the game with the players having God like top down views of the table. Also, they'll get a few seconds before I start counting. Like I said, it's not absolute. Finally, they should already...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

I didnt say it was universal. I said if you're having a problem with players mucking about and taking too long on their turns, it's because the DM is allowing it to happen. Not all DMs allow it to happen.

D&D General How many encounter do you complete before getting a Rest?

But sleeping in game takes literally 1 second in real time. Your group hates multiple combats per session or per long rest, because they're wildly different things.

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

That's a DM problem. Like, I play the same game, and there is no way in hell I'd have a player go off and walk his dog mid round, or the other players take so long that this would be seen as in any way acceptable. In my games, I give my players roughly 6 seconds (I'll start a slow count back...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

No that's not on the system. That's the DMs fault. Note, I said DM and not player because the DM is the one to manage it. DM: 'Dude, if you go off and walk your dog that's fine, but if your turn comes up and you're not back, you take the Dodge action and your turn ends; if you are back you'll...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

You cant blame the system for a dude walking his dog though. 5E is pretty fast as far as DnD goes. A lot quicker than 3rd (calculating power attack, and fiddly bonuses everywhere) and 4th (where every action is a specific ability that often needs to be looked up).

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

Me to that player. Please record it on your character sheet. If you take too long to tell me what your initiative score is next time, I'll set it to 1. Me to player 3. Please pay attention to the table Mate. Im not going to repeat myself. Your initiative count is being set to 1, because...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Overly Complex

Yeah I can get with online play slowing things up. Consider giving them a timer? When their PC screen indicates its their turn, they have (30 seconds?) to start to type in what they're doing or they take the Dodge action and their turn ends, and you move onto the next person.
