Hi I found this article by Lee Gold a very interesting read. It is quite long, and she is the publisher of Alarums and Excursions which has been published as a RPG Zine since 1976. While it does not contain specific 2e concepts, it can provide a good framework to figure it out in 2e mechanics.

Oh that is a fantastic way to use Downtime, especially since the genre's I tend to play in 5e (spies and supers) don't really focus on gp. Tying lvling up to downtime could increase its value.

I would agree with this, though I have found 2e to be a VAST improvement in streamlining the rules AND making them more enjoyable to implement. The changes to the Skill Endeavour rules have been fantastic.
