You primary stat should never be lower than 18

Are you sure about that Spatula? I (albeit briefly) mapped out a 30 level str paladin build, and I was pretty happy with the str based powers at most, if not all levels. The only bummer was my 3rd human at will - enfeebling smite, or some such, that was cha based. Trivia aside, I agree that...

    Minions and Temp HP

That's a good fix Stalker. We had that situation last session and the dm said no extra temp hps. 1 hp defines the minion, toughen them up but don't mess with their purpose.

    I don't get what you'all are saying

Going back to the OP "A lot of you are saying that in 4E, you are unable to ... how do you put it? ... roleplay the way you want? Play the way you want? Experience the game the way you want? I don't understand. Could you clarify?" Well the purpose of my post was a poke in the direction to the...

    I don't get what you'all are saying

(shrug) Care to explain your reasoning?

    I don't get what you'all are saying

4E implemented restrictions and that clashes with the liberal culture that most gamers are part of. In 3E in particular you had a lot of freedom when making your character, and a lot of that freedom was negative freedom - i.e. the freedom to make a really bad character. E.g. the Half Orc...

You primary stat should never be lower than 18

My human paladin has: str 16, con 12, dex 14, int 8, wis 14, cha 14. Compensated for lower hit/dam & hps by spending the feats on weapon focus(heavy blades) and toughness. At level 2 he further took weapon prof. (bastard sword). AC 21, Fort 16, Ref 17, Will 15. HPs 38. Base attack +7, 1d10+4...

Why do I complain about 4E?

I'll say one thing about critiquing from a distance, 4E plays different to how it reads. Much of the new rules fix former play stoppages, be they mechanical or in the game flow. Whatever you lose, you more than gain. I've got a family & career now, and only barely 4 precious hours to spare on...

UBER Dragonborn Fighter or Paladin Defender...we can build him!

I've attached the character advancement sheet I'm using for my first Paladin character. It's more of a character sketch because I intend to be organic with his development. Of note is that Tyrus's stats seem rather spread out and with seamingly sup-optimal odd numbers. However, given the feats...

    D&D 4E 4e houserules

I'm going to avoid all houserules unless they are absolutely necessary. I am frankly quite exhausted with the house rule culture of role playing games, and very much hope that unlike all prior editions 4E is completely playable as is. It really is quite amazing that for 30 odd years we've had...

D&D 4E Will Rule Zero be in 4E?

I only want to see rule 0 if 4E comes with a cheque to cover 'time and a half' for the overtime spent on game design. Personally I'd rather pay money for a game where the professionals have done the work, and we can just play.

    Reframing the 15 min day

Hi! :-) I'm FreeTheSlaves and I'm said dm and player. We used to do the '15 minute day' because it was a pretty smart way to concentrate power in a short period to more safely overcome the main daily obstacle. However, that and it's counters got pretty repetitive, so we looked for a way out...

    Value of Slaves

I don't think we can use the term indoctrination can we? I mean, freely engaging in a discussion of an issue using reasoned debate, is hardly indoctrination.

    The awesome encounter that wasn't.

I reckon we broadly agree. Frustration & irritation are not emotions we need to see much of around a cooperative game table. The dm's in the drivers seat to determine what goes into a planned encounter, so they can largely control the emotions. Ime I've found the RAW to have plenty of...

New Dungeoncraft: The Dungeons of Greenbrier Chasm

Personally, I'm willing to step down a rung lower and see where these quest rules takes me. We're all going to be new comers to 4E, and besides that there are more than a few bad habits from previous editions that need breaking. I won't allow the possibility of excessive pride to stop me from...

    The awesome encounter that wasn't.

I heartily agree with your assessment of communication being 2 way, however I don't fully agree with your 'net result'. Not playing an un-fun game does give more time to do fun things other than d&d. In the OP, the players were left feeling frustrated. That's the key message for the dm to take...

Scouting: Idiots Splitting Up or Valid Tactic?

Ime a lot of this comes down to the dm's skill. I've seen poor dming where the players would get punished whatever their characters did. Needless to say this is basically a pitfall for the improving dm to avoid. A better skilled dm will allow the players to have their characters succeed or...

A worry about "special case monster abilities"

This appears to be the source of contention. I don't know if it's a 3E encouraged mindset, a generation y thing, or whatever. A player sees something cool that s/he reckons their character could learn and they want access to it, regardless of whether they'll actually take it. I do believe that...

A worry about "special case monster abilities"

I do not currently have much worry about special case monster abilities in 4E. I think the Nightwalker, Bebilith, Rust Monster, and anything with level drain exemplify my concern with special case powers. Namely, the monster power was built around threats to the pc that really only make sense...

    On the Importance of Mortality

As long as the players are on board that can work. There are however plenty of players that would object to playing an adventure different to genre they agreed to play.

    On the Importance of Mortality

Lanefan, the only real differences we have is that I see nothing inevitable or necessarily final about character death. Ideally good player choices should answer the question of inevitability, and the presence of spiritual magic creates adequate justification to answer the question of the...
