    On the Importance of Mortality

This is to me a contradiction because my wish is to have my character's story develop forever. The best example I have is one of my friend's favourite character who achieved all his goals and when we finished that campaign he was nicely retired with family, peace, fame, lands and prosperity...

    On the Importance of Mortality

See, I can't fathom why you'd deliberately discourage player investment in their character. As it stands, the current rules already discourage player investment due to the excessive lethality. Adding to this problem, it sounds that regardless of how skillful you play you're character s/he's...

    On the Importance of Mortality

Lanefan is quite clear that there is no question of 'might' in his game - your character's death is a certainty. No doubt this is a player driven request... ;)

    On the Importance of Mortality

Pretty much spot on. The high-kill-ratio was a bit of a from-the-hip 'shot gun' comment regarding the necessity of death within my definition of heroism. I used the term 'ratio' in counter to the argument that character death must have actually occurred for it to be considered a real...

Messing with the basic assumptions of the system

:o Err, actually my post is a double fluff because we don't actually mess with much of the d&d assumptions. We bang our heads on them on occasion, but noone has the time or appetite to create a smorgasboard of houserules. My whopper 2E effort crippled that desire, and career/family performed...

    On the Importance of Mortality

My present character is a hero. He was at level 4, and he remains so at level 12. Death and mortality are two occasional adversaries he battles. Corruption and pride are continuous foes that have managed to defeat him twice, but then he has risen twice afterwards. I decided that was the...

    On the Importance of Mortality

I don't disagree with the idea that a character can die when fighting. The moment I jot down my character's hps, I have agreed to this possibility. The crux on my beef with character death is the way it is handled in 3E. It is trivialized by the ease by which it happens and is disruptive to...

    On the Importance of Mortality

However Raven Crowking, I think this entire thread is basically all about the valorization of character death. It is being touted as the primary and best consequence for failure, and that it adds so much more to the game. So in that regards Afrodyte's comment is a welcome tonic.

    On the Importance of Mortality

    1) Stop play effectively for that session. 2) The player needs to be convinced to continue that character's established plot even though raise dead pushes the player towards an optimal replacement. 3) Recalculate the raised character or generate a new one. 4) The party drops everything to go...

Messing with the basic assumptions of the system

Good post Shilson. :) I need to head off for now, but I'll post our groups' experiences tomorrow.

    On the Importance of Mortality

I agree it comes down to heroism. However I think the real impediment to building a heroic character is when you've got situations like: A) The 4hp Orc who is capable of dishing out 45 damage to one-shot your 30hp, 4th level fighter. B) A trio of shadows who can surprise, flank and slay a 9th...

If you decide to guarantee no guarantees in your game, then more power to you. We on the other hand play otherwise.

    On the Importance of Mortality

The death results in 2 very not fun consequences. Either a level loss that primarily punishes me - the player, or the permanent removal of my character that I have invested time and energy in, and become attached to. Being comatose results in a play experience that remove me from contributor to...

    On the Importance of Mortality

Imo current and previous editions have been way too lethal on PCs. Threat of death needs to exist, but good play should be able to reliably counter it. Dying despite making the right choices and wise plans simply outright sucks the fun from the game. I recently lost a valued cohort even though...

Wellington, NZ, 3.5E, RttToEE, lvl 11+

Hi there, We're looking to invite a Wellington NZ gamer to out weekly/fortnightly session. The current 3.5 core books only campaign we're playing (before 4E) is Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil, and the characters are 11th-12th level. Our play style is: 1) minimal house rules 2) you're...

Seeking input on a new sorcerer/wizard spell, all welcome

Actions are the premium currency in a turn based game. I don't think it's a good idea to be handing extra actions out at all, especially to just 2 classes. Wizards & Sorcerers are a couple of classes least needing the power boost at high level anyway.

    Possible houserules

Thanks for the additional replies guys (& gals?). This thread was not forgotten, it's just that we've been debating via email. 1st up a few responses. **** Thank you for the pointers eschwenke & Tequila Sunrise, I gave them a look over. **** Infiniti2000 We use the various animal buffs...

Dinosaurs as Animal Companions - Gamebreaker?

I think the introduction of the dinosaur was poorly handled if a goal was to keep the group intact. After 1.5 years people get to know each other, so I'm guessing that how this dinosaur introduction turned out is not quite so surprising to the people involved. Bluntly, all people share fault...

    Possible houserules

Thanks for the replies people. I deliberately left off replying earlier as our group are still mulling over these options and more. Still a bit more to do. (Oh, and thanks Primitive Screwhead, my wife and I just got married in China where we've been staying with her folks. It's totally polluted...

D&D 4E 4e Heal info in new Confessions article

In my experience I have never enjoyed this 'excitement and drama'. I've had characters die over meaningless encounters, much to our frustration. Typically this happened due to a sudden dump of out-of-whack hp damage, save or die, or no-save ability damage. That's what can happen when you...
