Project Sigil Project Sigil Updates: D&D's 3d Virtual Tabletop

D&D Insider was crap when it came out. I think 4e was mechanically extremely strong, I own most of 4E D&D products, but it didn't feel like D&D to our group and we never got interest/motivated in playing/DMing it. This is not a poke at the 4e edition. I never touched D&D Insider at the end, but...

Project Sigil Project Sigil Updates: D&D's 3d Virtual Tabletop

Gee... I wonder why... * looks at WotC's trackrecord the last 25 years * Look, we can all stick our head in the sand and pretend the last 25 years of WotC software program/services didn't happen, but that's just foolish imho. When a company tries to make a new software/services ecosystem (what...

Project Sigil Project Sigil Updates: D&D's 3d Virtual Tabletop

Minis are 3d objects, thus 3d objects can be properly 3d scanned, and with some work converted to STL files. There are also a TON of 3rd parties, kickstarters, patreons and STL sites that provide high quality STLs. Now, getting those STLs from something to print to something to use in a 3D VTT...

Project Sigil Project Sigil Updates: D&D's 3d Virtual Tabletop

It looks pretty from the screenshots, but I'm going to be harsh here: Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. In the last 25 years WotC (Hasbro) has imho produced one good product of tech/software and that is Magic the Gathering: Arena. Everything else was either absolute crap or...

Quick, while everyone is focused on the 5.24 PHB...

Yes, it's from the German "Das Scwharze Auge" (DSA). The current game doesn't resemble the version from 35+ years ago. It was my first RPG and reminds me a lot of the atmosphere of those old choose your adventure books, it was gritty and certainly not high magic. More akin to WFRP then D&D imho...

    Are our tastes set?

No. But our (perceived) likes might be. Keep in mind that certain things not only have a functional/aesthetic value to us, but also an emotional one. We use words like nostalgia, which is essentially a high emotional attachment to something. That attachment might be due to it being your 'first'...

Mine was "Oog Des Meesters", in English know as "The Dark Eye" somewhere in '85-'88, we moved to the Dutch version of the basic red box of D&D in '88 and then moved on to the English version of AD&D 2nd Edition in '89.

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

Some would call that backpedaling if it was WotC/Hasbro and not Paizo... I like Pathfinder/Starfinder and have quite a few digital products by them (besides some physical D&D/PF1 stuff), sure they are a lot less corporate the WotC/Hasbro, but that doesn't suddenly mean they can't do 'bad'...

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

Has Paizo pulled a 'WotC'? Essentially doing the same thing WotC did, trying to pull the OGL...

D&D General A History of Violence: Killing in D&D

The ancient Romans made the Colosseum to keep the rabble amused and pacified. Isn't this the same with the current entertainment? Be it Boxing, MMA, violent movies, violent computer games, and 50 year old pnp RPGs... My perspective: As long as no actual humans are hurt by us fighting pixels or...

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

Of course, but it's just one heatsink, it's the entire case, so no opening requires. It's this case: https://akasa.co.uk/update.php?tpl=product/product.detail.tpl&type=FANLESS%20CASES&type_sub=Mini%20PC&model=A-NUC62-M1BV2

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

But as with car parts, buying second hand computer parts isn't for the average consumer and certainly not for the not-Tech person that's running that 10+ year old machine. They don't know what they need exactly, they wouldn't even know how to read a compatibility list. Chances are good that they...

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

But you don't have car mechanics, you have tank mechanics, because a Lada is supposedly built like a tank! ;) But Ladas are known to be cheap and easy to work with. There's a difference in income, hourly rates, car costs, car parts, and rules depending on location. There's a big difference...

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

That is not entirely accurate. Clock speeds don't say much about capacity/performance anymore. It's like talking about a cars speed when you actually want to know how much stuff it can move per hour between point A and B. If we look at an AMD 1800X from 2017 and an AMD 7800X3D, there is still...

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

If you want a decent experience, you want to use a good VTT. But you could play D&D over the phone or even over radio... There are even instances of play-by-mail (actual snailmail)... But all that, is not what we're talking about. Using Teams, Zoom, Slack, etc. to play D&D might be technically...

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

That's like saying, you have to buy a house to play D&D in... People that are interested in playing with Tech (D&D via VTTs) generally already have Tech. Be it a tablet, a laptop or PC. You could theoretically even play on a smartphone or console... People that aren't interested in playing that...

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

Converting to wepb images helps. And it helps that I'm hosting via 1gig up/1gig down fiber in Europe. Our friend in Australia might have to wait for the postal pigeon to arrive with the USB stick though... ;) It also helps that it caches locally, so it's not constantly loading.

D&D General Shocked how hard it is to get new players now-a-days

It also depends which VTT you're using in the browser, Foundry VTT works fine in the browser with dynamic lighting, (spell) effects, etc. If you want you can even run it as a 3d engine with the right Foundry Module... A modern browser (Chrome/Edge/Firefox/Safari) can use hardware acceleration...

D&D 5E (2014) Feasibility of rewriting Vecna: Eve of Ruin into an Evil campaign? (Spoilers for Vecna: Eve of Ruin)

Why bother changing that much? The actual PCs got a premonition via one of their hag allies that a party of heroes would collect the Rod of Seven Parts to thwart Vecna. They killed the hag, so it couldn't repeat the premonition and they murdered the heroes and took their place, pulling a...
