D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

Sure...according to the way you interpret those alignments. You can get to the same place (and every writer does) without worrying about it. I mean, Gygax justified murdering babies as lawful good in certain circumstances, so... If the point of roleplaying is to play as your character...

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

CR also employs somewhere around 80 people now, so they have a lot of factors to consider when making a huge decision like this - that's a lot of livelihoods to be responsible for, and it's clear they take that very seriously. Above all, I think they are large enough now that they have to be...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

This is a + thread, so I don't want to get into the many reasons I dislike alignment. It serves a valuable purpose for some, and that is enough to justify it in the game. I will say that, as a creative writing teacher, I have never heard of a single author who worries about "alignment" when...

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

Okay, why should you play 1e? Well, because it's the OG! Or at least the closest version of the game to the OG that is actually playable by itself. And don't wrorry about all the tables and confusing rules, because nobody played it entirely as written back in the day, including Gary Gygax, so...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I utterly, completely reject this. Been playing for more than forty years, run innumerable games, and have run the D&D Club at a high school for years where I teach beginners how to play. The vast majority of players love inventing characters and concepts and trying out new ideas and...

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

True, and it's also a niche game within a niche segment of the TTRPG space. Going for a chunk of (essentially) Call of Cthulhu's turf is a lot different from trying to grab a little chunk of D&D vast terrain.

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

I’m confused. “Why you wouldn’t” and “why would anyone not” are the same question, except the latter is more general. Is this thread supposed to be why anyone SHOULD want to play 1e? Like, just give the positives?

TSR Why would anyone WANT to play 1e?

1e will always be my first love, and I would still play it but not run it. 5e keeps the vibe but is miles easier to run and doesn’t punish players for wanting to play something that wasn’t Gary Gygax’s preference.

Definitely seems legit. If it's from anonymous insiders and all.

    D&D General Mythos in D&D

I, on the other hand, love Old Ones and eldritch entities and work them in all over the place! Partly because I have a lot of really great miniatures for them. I love freaky looking monsters. Also, even though I like moral complexity in the story, there are times when it is fun for players to...

D&D General Tucker's Kobolds: worth using in 5e?

What if I don't care about what kobolds are "supposed" to have or be able to do according to anyone else's canon and I create the scenario that will be fun in my game? Does that make me an "adversarial DM"? I am very confident that my players do not see me as an adversarial DM. I put a lot of...

D&D General Tucker's Kobolds: worth using in 5e?

Sure, but that's just a balance issue. I think the concept is great fun; you just have to balance it so that the players can adapt and overcome unless they insist on being stupid. I've also used a similar concept when the point is for the party to get through the area as quickly as possible, not...

US Tariffs: $80-$200 Surcharge On All Packages Regardless of Price

Yes, and Mexico and Canada do indeed trade with each other, which means goods do indeed cross another nation. So it's relevant to Mexico when they ship to Canada, not just Alaska. It's okay, we're used to Americans forgetting we exist. In fact, we prefer it to the current alternative.

Well, Alaska and the entire country of Canada.

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

Backstory? I find it really odd that anyone playing an RPG would see their caracter as a "pawn." That just defeats the whole purpose of playing an RPG. And contrary to your assertion, most RPGs do not need anything like alignment. Most modern RPGs give you guidance on how to create backstory...

D&D General Tucker's Kobolds: worth using in 5e?

I’ve gotten around the excess rolling by turning minion attacks and traps into lair actions. Edit: should probably better explain. Example: in a recent pirate ship battle, the ship's crew was assisting the PCs against the big band and a few of his henchmen, all quite tough. Rather than add 20...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I don’t like or use alignment but one of my players does. He likes it because he has trouble getting into role play and finds it provides him a handy set of rules for how to play his character. It is perhaps not a surprise that he plays a paladin. Anyway, it works for him so I say bless.

Critical Role to Use D&D 2024 Rules For Campaign Four, Expands to Three Tables and Thirteen Players

Causal factors in the rise of D&D (IMO): 1. The demographics of Gen X. 2. The publication of 5e 3. Pop culture tie-ins (see 1) 4. The growth of streaming 5. Lost Mine of Phandelver I’ve probably forgot something, but those are the big five in my mind, and I think 1 dwarfs everything else.

My understanding is that Felicia Day suggested the switch because D&D is better known.
