Why not just accept that if Bob says that it's important to him that other people doesn't play his character, he means it, even if doesn't make sense to you? People get emotional about their creative works in ways they don't do about chairs or peanuts.

But they're not the same. We don't know exactly how different they will be, but from the UAs it seems that for example stealth will be handled significantly different in 5.5. If you look up a rule in a rulebook at the table, you want to find the same rule regardless of which PHB you grab.

Everyone doesn't have control of the house rules at the table. House rules are good, but things working out of the box is better. I don't expect perfect balance from 5.5, but from what we've seen, one of the major design goals of the revamp is to improve balance.
