If there's one thing I've learned from working with software design, is that something that's glaringly obvious to one person, can be completely un-intuitive to someone else. Making things explicit is never wrong.

I don't think there will be many complaints either. Most groups will abandon old 5e and move completely to the new version, so there will be nothing to complain about.

So why not write that it's a spell? Why leave the DM to guess if it's supposed to be a spell or not, and if so what level?

I like to reward players for creative solutions. But I also don't want to award an auto-win for any suggestion outside of the box. If I don't think a proposed solution will work, or has a significant chance to fail, I will tell the player just that. The player then has an opportuntiy to convince...

I foresee plenty of problems when the DM and players have different ideas about what the rules do depending on what book they've read. But I usually play with people who try to learn the rules. If everyone just goes with what the DM says, you don't need a rulebook at all, regardless of edition.

In other words, it's not 100% compatible, so it's not the same game, but a new variant. A new "edition" of sorts.

Whatever term the major youtubers and tiktokers use to differentiate "new D&D" from "old D&D" is probably going to be what sticks in the larger community.

We don't plan on switching the current campaign to 5.1e, but our next campaign will probably use the new rules. It might be a while though, we have other games in the pipeline before it's time for D&D again.

The fastest way to kill D&D would probably be to pair it up with defunct franchises. Crossovers like "Rick & Morty" and "Minecraft" are made with franchises that are already popular among the target customers for D&D, with the goal being both to boost awareness of D&D as well as making money...
