D&D 4E Needing a crash course in 4e to DM

If you aren't using pregens, I'd see about making power cards for people. They make the game SO much smoother.

D&D 4E The grindyness of 4e combat: anyone tried a solo monster yet?

I've done somewhere between five and ten solos, I think. The only one we've had, with six or less characters, last more than an hour was a playtest of a bad guy that was a 7th level encounter played by 3rd level characters. I actually think that we hit the point where I said "If the battle...

4th Edition Pregrade Product from Final Redoubt Press

Note: Right now there's a privacy note on the product stating that your information will be sent to us if you order. That's for the print version, and I've asked them to remove it when they can. Right now only the electronic pregrade version is for sale. Customers who buy the pregrade will...

    GSL Included in Book?

Do you have to include the GSL in your product. I couldn't find reference in the license.

Mearls said magic items could easily be dumped?

If you have the players add it in on their sheets, they do the math once, when they level. If you take it off monsters, you have to do it at least once every fight. If that's worth it to you, though, there's no problem there, but I would get burned out a little quicker each night due to the...

    Doing the GSL. Who?

    Final Redoubt Press is.

D&D 4E Handling things like Riding and Craft with 4E Skills.

For craft, if they have a background that makes the crafty, I'll just let them do it, and judge the end results on their level. If I really need a skill roll, I'll just invent a floating skill for the purpose and make it trained or not based on character background. I think the intent here is...

    Wondering waht other DMs do...

To mix things, up, you should model a fight after the modern military. Think of a group of soldiers under the command of a first sergeant and a second lieutenant. Make the soldiers standard, the sergeant elite and the commanding officer a minion. :)

Good FLGSs in Vegas & Salt Lake City

If you want service, I'd recommend Purple Dragon Games in Salt Lake, but their facilities are . . . let's say "sparse." :) I usually order from from them, because I like supporting stores that small. The other major store is Hastur Hobbies. They are also the store you go to if you need...

    Designing user-friendly adventure module maps

I'd try to present them in a way that's easy to print for free. I like CC3, because it has a free viewer and you can print tiled pages at miniature scale. Other programs might be able to do the same. :)

    4e D&D GSL Live

Oh, here's two I missed. I don't see Dungeons & Dragons as a reference, unless I'm just not seeing it. So how do we refer to the game itself? We are allowed to say D&D in citations, but I didn't see it as a reference itself. Importantly, how to we refer to it: 1) in the text. Eventually...

    4e D&D GSL Live

I would suspect you can do most of those things to make your setting unique. For instance: "I don't want Star Pact Warlocks in the campaign?" How about creating your own warlock class, and not including it, then directing people to that class as per the suggestion on Humans above. "Healing...

    4e D&D GSL Live

Yeah. The only thing that will cause me real issues with The Echoes of Heaven is if I'm not allowed to disallow races. I have one race that just doesn't fit the setting and two that I'd like to make minor changes to, and so I'd have to disallow the official version and make my own. I can...

    4e D&D GSL Live

TimeOut, I read that Q and A as I don't have to use a defined term in the setting. For instance, I could make a setting without warlocks. But I did ask WotC about it, so we'll see how they respond. Plus, I bet someone will be answering this thread in the morning.

    4e D&D GSL Live

BTW, I agree with checking before writing the rules. It occurs to me though that I didn't see a clause about removing or disregarding a definition. For instance, I think you can write up a wood elf and then, at the very least, leave the normal elf out of your race list, removing it by...

What do 3rd-party publishers think of the GSL?

I feel much the same. I can certainly do what I want to do with it. I might not be able to do it the WAY I wanted, but you can't have everything. I think it's very workable.

    'Create Cleric' Ritual

I was tickled by this myself. It's close to one of my core ideas in The Echoes of Heaven Campaign Setting (small plug, http://enworld.rpgnow.com/index.php?filters=0_0_0&manufacturers_id=729). We'd say, however, that you merely need to convince the other clerics or paladins that you are the...

    Maps for Encounters

Hi. While we're waiting for the GSL, I thought I'd start a discussion on the Wizards encounter format (two page spread with a battlemap). They take up a lot of space, and I'm sure 3PP like myself and Goodman would love to hear your opinions on it. What do you prefer, especially for encounters...

    Custom Magic Item Rules?

Write it up and assign it a level. That will determine its price. The hard part is just getting the level right.

2nd Printing. Are the misprints fixed?

Am I missing something? I didn't know that anyone was actually running out of books. I thought this was a preemptive measure.
