Start use music during battles that conveys the feel of the battle. At some point when they are mid to high level describe that they hear something coming at then through the forest and start playing the Godzilla theme music.

The armor my 12th level Cleric uses is a plain non-magical, non-masterwork chain shirt that he has had since 2nd level. Keep meaning to get some better stuff.

In a previous campaign we had a strait 19th level Rogue. Only one character with one level of Barb No rangers No psionic PC's I played a druid in a campaign that starting off everyone got one minor magic item. I took Ring of Animal Friendship and had quite a few wolves followin me around.
