    D&D 5E (2014) Where's the 5E boxed set?

The only successful sleeved book sets that D&D has seen were for 3.5 and 4E. Both times the 3 core books saw simultaneous release, and the sleeved set was released at the same time for the same price as the 3 books combined (actually for 10 cents more).

    D&D 5E (2014) Those poor farmers!

Maybe. WotC could have included more about farming and trade and owning and runnng a business. Like the 186 pages covering some of the above in the book by Expeditious Retreat Press, "A Magical Medieval Society: Western Europe" (a great book, by the way). But most new DMs would not wish to buy a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you use a DM screen?

I nearly always use a screen. I prefer the landscape style. There are some charts and references on then screen that I refer to often. It limits my sprawl on the table. And it provides a handy place to post some of my notes. It also provides screening for the rolls I do not wish the players to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Unboxing & Review of @GaleForceNine's Spellbook Cards

It looks like Alliance is sold out and waiting for a restock. And so is ACD sold out.

D&D 5E (2014) Primeval Awareness and other hidden gems

For me, casting Guidance once per minute means 10% of the time I will not be able to cast another spell. That's not a trade-off I'm always willing to take.

    D&D 5E (2014) Riddle Me This

I enjoy but rarely include riddles in my games. But puzzles are often included. First I let the players work on it. If they are stumped I will usually allow INT checks. If they are still stumped, I don't solve it for them. That would be like having them face a monster, but if they can't kill it...

    D&D 5E (2014) The 'Optional' DMG

Your edit was the key. For me, the DMG is necessary for the game I want to run.

D&D 5E (2014) Scroll Casting, casting a spell from a scroll 1 higher than your spell slot

I guess the answer is the same. The spell is on your list (thanks to your special ability), but above your highest slot (since you have none) so it is still an ability check DC10+spell level.

D&D 5E (2014) Stats, and how do you generate them

Aahhhh. He wants to play "Open the door (doesn't matter if it's locked); Kill the monster (don't bother with fighting it); take the treasure (no need to find it)! I don't run that game! Hand him a game controller!

D&D 5E (2014) Stats, and how do you generate them

Point out to him that, since the point-buy method AND the stat array method both have a max possible score of 15 (before racial adjustments), that is how the game is designed. If he balks, tell him it is too much trouble for you to similarly boost the stats and powers of every monster and NPC to...

Loss of hand or arm does not change spellcasting requirements.

D&D 5E (2014) Scroll Casting, casting a spell from a scroll 1 higher than your spell slot

The above is when using a spell scroll of a spell on you class list but of level higher than you have slots. Spells not on your class list are auto-fail, on your list at your level, no check needed. No check needed for Scrolls of Protection. Just need to understand the written language, DMG 139.

D&D 5E (2014) Scroll Casting, casting a spell from a scroll 1 higher than your spell slot

From DMG page 200, DC is 10+spell level, check uses spellcasting ability. For your Wizard, INT check, DC 12

D&D 5E (2014) Morale and Loyalty in the DMG

I think I'll use the Wisdom modifier to determine if a creature chooses correctly whether it's time to bug out or surrender or stay and fight.

D&D 5E (2014) Morale and Loyalty in the DMG

Creature checks for being surprised, reduced to half HP for first time in battle, or no way to harm opposing side. She could be affected by the second condition, but being the leader might be more motivated to stay. Group checks if whole group is surprised, leader removed from battle (0HP...

D&D 5E (2014) Morale and Loyalty in the DMG

Loyalty is in a different section of the book (page 93 for loyalty, page 273 for morale). An NPC has a maximum score of the highest Charisma score in the party, but a starting score of 1/2 the maximum. As the game progresses, his score can increase or decrease in d4 increments (or 2d4 if treated...

D&D 5E (2014) Morale and Loyalty in the DMG

There are several circumstances for an individual creature to make a check, and other circumstances for a group check, made by their leader. If leader cannot make the check (unconscious, dead) creature with next highest Charisma makes check.
