    Impact of mechanics on roleplay

I start with a character concept and then try to represent that concept as closely as possible within the mechanics of the game. Sometimes the mechanics don't quite allow me to represent the character as I had conceived it, but that can be interesting if you go with it and see where it takes the...

Do you use a DM screen?

In general I do use a screen; I keep my notes and my dice rolls behind it. On occasion we run a game that is primarily a dungeon crawl with no punches pulled; for those I don't use a screen and all rolls are in the open.

By some accounts Isaac Newton was a good example of someone with high intelligence but low wisdom.

Different Power Sources - Different Mechanics

I think I may end up using 4E as a base for a homebrew system that combines things from a few previous editions of the game. I'm not too sure what I'll be doing at this point. For starters I would like the expand the wizard spellbook. I'd like wizards to be able to have a lot of spells in their...

What 4e products have you purchased?

None right now, but I do expect to pick up the core set at some point. I've just joined a new group that is playing 4E so I do need them now but I'm still holding out a while to get a later printing that will incorporate the first few waves of errata.

I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

The only times I've seen people rip up character sheets is when they've failed system shock rolls, but I think that's not an inappropriate response in context. As for toilet humour, the day I stop finding it funny I hope my player will take pity on me and rip up my character sheet.

Dark Sun 4e: Can it work?

I'm confident it could be done. The real question, for me, is if WotC would do it in a manner that attempted to preserve the setting or if they'd go at it with the hammer and tongs like they did with FR; whether they approach it as adapting 4E for Dark Sun or adapting Dark Sun for 4E. I had...

I'd expect they'll get through their schedule for the month what with it moving to subscription next month.

Tell me about your D&D group

My group has been together for about twenty years, but I only joined in 1993. It's seen a bit of turnover from among an extended group of friends. There are six of us left who haven't yet failed a system shock roll. We're all male, age range is 32-39. Professions include computer programmer...

    1 Million Inn/Tavern Patrons

I've enjoyed these threads you're doing. This one reminds me of a suite of simple programs I made for generating NPCs back around the start of 3E. I built a database of names, about 95000 male and 65000 female, and tagged them by cultural background and gender so I could specify culture and...

    Now Is This A Promise?

I'm not too sure what the issue is here. I'd expect just about everyone who has decided they will subscribe will be doing so by the month for the first few months to see what WotC deliver. If it's not up to expectations people will cancel.

    Hadron Goblin Supercollider

Amusing post. The interesting thing is that neither goblin could ever shift into the square of the other so they'd go from moving incredibly fast to a dead stop as soon as they were adjacent to each other. As crafty as goblins are I'm sure they could come up with a system of tunnels lined with...

Why is everyone so down on Charm Person?

Me too, but after what happened to the last thread that got into this territory I decided that ENWorld isn't the place to discuss it.

Flavour First vs Game First - a comparison

I'm not so sure about that; just about every campaign I've played in has had its fair share of house rules to go with it. I've also played with a few DMs who were prone to making things up as they went along and so long as they were consistent it wasn't a problem.

I wonder why they called it The Legend of Drizzt when it's not about Drizzt.

Sin on! Sin off! Sin on sin off - The Paladin!

I like it but I would give the player some subtle pointers along the way so they didn't feel like they were playing whack-a-sin in the dark. It would also depend on the player; I can see some really running with it and generating some interesting role play but I can also see some players being...

DMs: Do you tell players the DC before they roll?

Only if it should be obvious to them. I might give them some hints if appropriate, perhaps telling a would be pick pocket that his victim looks drunk or on guard, or telling a lock picker that the lock appears to be a make he's familiar with or totally unlike anything he's seen before, or...
