Giving Gnomes the Eladrin racial powers would make them much less appealing. It'd take so much more work to spit and roast them if they're fey stepping all over the place.

I haven't argued that 4E will require it more than any other edition. Looking at the rules we have seen I think 4E does seem like it may be tied to using a map if you want to use the rules as written, but no more than 3E I suppose. Hasn't there been a post from a designer somewhere saying...

I did consider that but figured maybe he could be doing other things in the meantime. You nailed the spirit of the solution in any case. Thinking about it made me think of the Cavalier from Dragon/1E UA that has the clause about using reach or ranged weapons being against their code.

I didn't use miniatures or a battle map until 3E so I'll have to disagree with you on this.

That's got the right flavour but the paladin could still mark an enemy and then avoid it. Worse still if circumstances permit the paladin to force the marked enemy to fight through allies to get to him, or if he can close a door between himself and the marked enemy and let it kill itself trying...

In my opinion the most appropriate place for him to lurk in a campaign setting would be the equivalent of Colonel Sanders in The Matrix.

I'm seeing this argument very often in response to people expressing that they don't like what they're hearing about 4E. Not so much in response to people expressing that they like what they're hearing about 4E. It should be equally valid in both cases, no? And if so, then the argument leaves...
