Andy Collin's comments re censoring playtester reviews

I think it's a somewhat spurious distinction myself because it relies on other assumptions. For what you've suggested to be so we have to assume that the people that commented simply had no issues whatsoever with 4E and their experience was without exception positive. Had it been otherwise they...

Andy Collin's comments re censoring playtester reviews

I may be misunderstanding your point but isn't this restricting what they were allowed to say publicly?

Andy Collin's comments re censoring playtester reviews

I don't think there's anything wrong with them talking up the positives. As has been mentioned elsewhere the criticisms stay in house for review and development. This is what you expect from WotC during the development of the product. The issue here has been when people not employed by WotC...

Love the Game, Hate the Marketing

I didn't say that they were independent press. They are also not WotC staff and there was no disclosure that they were commenting within certain restrictions, so I would say it was fair for the community to assume that it was independent commentary. As you can tell from my previous post I...

The Possibility of "Too Fantastic" Fantasy

A good exercise if you're thinking about this topic is to do some thought experiments involving real world societies and magic. I get side tracked with experiments like that quite often when I sit down to do some world design and a lot of the time it's hard to escape the conclusion that magic...

Love the Game, Hate the Marketing

If marketers are in a position to determine whether outsiders are allowed to spread negative press then I think the status of the latter as outsiders is questionable. That seems to be the issue that some are offended by. While I'm not one of them I can understand why they might feel that way...

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

Thematically I don't like the Irresistable Command ability. I think it just seems a little too comical a scenario for me given the context in which players will generally be encountering a Pit Fiend. Tactically I guess it will have its uses. Until we have a more complete picture of how 4E works...

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

Ever since a gazebo got away with it they're all giving it a shot.

If the devils are how monsters will be....I am so happy

Combat in 3E does bog things down at my table. Obscenely so if compared to similar situations in 1E and 2E. I'm happy they're working on speeding up combat in 4E but unless I look no further back than 3E it doesn't seem like something that should be such a huge selling point to me.

    D&D 4E I'm Not Sure I Can Afford 4e

I know a few groups who are still saying this about 1E. They're still playing it so I guess they're not wrong.

FR Update at WotC-Year of the Ageless One

I meant lazy in context for FR. Killing off Mystra and having a people transported onto the world has already been done numerous times in FR history. Surely they have enough talented folks working on it to be able to come up with a new twist.

Why D&D Is Better Than World of Warcraft

I'd recommend picking up the Deft Swindler power to upgrade your pizza mooching ability to a per encounter refresh.

FR Update at WotC-Year of the Ageless One

It's not out of line for FR but it does seem kind of lazy. Another Mystra frag (I suppose it's becoming a tradition), another interdimensional import.

    Core mechanic changes?

    Isn't it more like 20 x 12 + 20 * 7 = 240 + 140 = 380? (I guess you're going by average dice rolls beyond 1st level, but the toughest dwarf wouldn't settle for averages!)

D&D 4E How is the 4e announcement affecting your game groups?

It hasn't affected my group yet. Our plans are still to wrap up our current 3.0/3.5 FR campaign and then move back to 1E or 2E using a minimal set of rulebooks for a homebrew campaign. We're probably a prime target for 4E as we feel 3.0/3.5 just bogs down our gaming sessions too much. However...

FR - details on the spellplague

I've always felt that one of the strengths of the FR setting was the amount of material behind it; it's possible to explore FR without ever rolling up a character. I'm curious what people felt was drawing them to the setting if the volume of background available was putting them off. The reason...

FR - details on the spellplague

Hadn't really followed this as I tend not to incorporate official changes into campaigns I run in official settings. I can't say I like the changes much. I also can't say I like the position WotC are taking in response to the reaction to the changes. And, seriously, Mystra needs to take a hint...

Some D&D Insider bits (Update 9/13: Lots of new info)

I'm not sure I'd make that assumption so readily. It seems that D&DI may be a nickel and dime extravaganza in disguise. At some point they'll need to qualify how much you actually need to pay for the "full 4E experience" that D&DI is supposed to be bringing. Is it the base subscription? Or the...

D&D 4E Killing Time Before 4e Comes Out

After about three years running a 3E Forgotten Realms campaign I discussed a change of pace with my group as passion was pretty obviously dwindling. The call for a 1E game in a low-magic setting was unanimous. The 1E game will likely extend past the release of 4E unless there are compelling...
