    Retreating: Creating decision points

I think he presented some good ideas (thanks for the link). I seem to have read it the same way you did: at the end of act two the DM evaluates the situation and either gives the players a boost to mop up or a hint that they should think about withdrawing from the fight. I like your...

Which RPGs are you currently playing?

Playing: 3 4E games. Running: one OD&D and one Rules Cyclopedia game, and beginning preparations for a d20 Gamma World game - although it could end up being a post-apocalyptic GURPS game.

Classes and Roles: supply and demand

Interesting, that does seem to be at odds with how they've categorized the FR books on their product list, not to mention that the covers of the books themselves - as seen on the WotC product pages, at least - label them as supplements. If they truly are trying to redefine the meaning of core...

Classes and Roles: supply and demand

I've updated the original post with some charts of the data so far. The Forgotten Realms campaign and player's guides are both listed as accessories and not core game products on the WotC product list. I think the wizard suffers from a case of mistaken identity: the 4E wizard is not the...

Classes and Roles: supply and demand

I've been looking at making a character for a 4E game; the group needs a defender. I already play a fighter in another game and I don't really want to play a paladin which leaves warden as the only choice and unfortunately the concept doesn't grab me - the game is core only so the swordmage is...

The Power System, Combat, and the Rest of the Game

I don't disagree. I think the biggest change in the game experience I've noted is that where I would have used the rules to systematize the imagination I now use the imagination to rationalize the rules. I've had this same experience with skill challenges as I mentioned in this thread.

The Power System, Combat, and the Rest of the Game

I think you've done a good job of articulating the disconnect some people feel with the power system. Sometimes I don't mind that style of game, sometimes I do.

The Power System, Combat, and the Rest of the Game

I have to agree with you on this; the amount of real time that is spent resolving combat is significant, as a result a large proportion of table time is taken up by resolving combats and as the game as a whole tends to move very slowly. Case in point: last night's session with a group running...

    D&D 4E 4e Save or Die?

Sounds like a good way to play a successful saving throw in those situations.

    D&D 4E 4e Save or Die?

They got rid of some of them, but some are still save or die; the two saves or die mechanic is still a save or die mechanic. Without modifiers you've got 11 in 20 chances of passing the first save, roughly 4 in 5 chances of failing the first save and then passing the second, and roughly 1 in 5...

So, after the Green Ronin announcement, I am...

It's Dark Sun: Shattered Lands. I remember that when I was playing it I was also playing through Ultima VII, Part Two: Serpent Isle, another awesome - and awesomely long - game. Fond memories.

    Rouges sux!

If your right he could loose a lot of money. (I feel dirty now.)

    Rouges sux!

In a 1E group I used to play with the term of choice was Creative Acquisitionist.

So, after the Green Ronin announcement, I am...

I think this deal could be a good thing depending on the specifics of the product. Looking at games BioWare has developed in recent years that are based on their own properties - Jade Empire and Mass Effect - what I've observed about them is that they're very good at creating settings but not so...

Tiefling, Dragonborn : have they gained traction ?

Across the three groups I'm playing in we've got the following representation: 6 humans 3 dwarves 3 elves 2 eladrins 2 halflings 1 tiefling 1 goliath 1 half-orc (Disclaimer: one of the groups started out with players restricted to human characters but later relaxed the restriction and now has...

    Rat King

If you're talking about Rat Kings I'd model them on the Hydra.

    Charm

Thanks for the heads up. I don't have Arcane Power but I had a look on the Compendium; it is just about the same if the Bard requirement is struck off. Ten minutes to work the ritual seems like a long time for this kind of thing, though.

    Charm

I thought about making something like the following ritual. Feedback is welcome. Charm Level: 1 Category: Binding Time: 1 minute Duration: Special Component Cost: 10 gp Market Price: 50 gp Key Skill: Arcana, Bluff, Diplomacy (see text) The target will view the caster in the best...
