While my attack descriptions involve a lot of blood & gore, mechanically Thorn is still attacking with non-lethal damage. HPs in D&D has always been an abstract thing: not just blood loss, but loss of moral, wearing a person down, loss of luck, etc. I hope this clears up any confusion
