    [edition neutral] No more dailies?

To amplify this, the 1e rulebooks specifically warn players against "just one more room syndrome" on a number of occasions and Dragon magazine was full of editorials and advice articles BITD about resting/retreating when resources are depleted.

    [edition neutral] No more dailies?

I think this idea has possibilities. It may be too simplistic, but my initial thought is a +1 to all damage rolls in the next encounter that is cumulative as long as you don't take an extended rest. So complete encounter 1 and in encounter 2, you have +1 to damage. In encounter 3, you have +2...

So a Ranger and his bear walk into a tavern...

In addition to the intimidation factor, everybody knows that adventurers go out into the wilderness and steal hoards of treasure from dangerous beasts. So to the local innkeeper, an adventurer is pretty much a walking bag of gold with loose morals and bad judgement. Innkeeper: "Why yes, good...

Next Deities & Demigods (now with poll!)

He doesn't seem to be a very popular option, but I would really like to see a D&DG on Erathis.

The ENWorld Gamer: What Kind of Gamer Are You?

In the last month, I played Talisman, Gammarauders (board games), Solitaire, Poker (card games), Tetris, Spider Solitaire (non-rpg computer games), Baldur's Gate, Crazy Taxi, Rock Band 2 (console games), D&D4e, B/X D&D (RPGs), Soccer, Softball (team sports) and Golf (non-team sport).

Darkest Depths of Mordor -- Led Zeppelin

There is no question that Robert Plant was a Tolkien fan and often referenced Middle Earth in his lyrics. He also named his dog Strider. :D

    [edition neutral] No more dailies?

I feel much the same way and have been considering having dailies and healing surges refresh after every 2nd milestone (i.e. every 4 encounters) rather than at extended rests.

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

Gary caught plenty of flak for stating his strong opinions about things. Heck, there are people who still rant and rave about things he wrote in Dragon 30 years ago. So don't worry, you're in good company. :D

Did Gygax owe a bit of thanks to WotC?

I think you're straying well into the realms of hyperbole here. Gary had some negative things to say about 3e. However, I read his Q&A threads both here and at DF and I don't recall him ever "insulting" the game or referring to it as an "abomination". There is a distinct difference (IMO at...

Suggestions for Reasons To Send Harry Potter on an Adventure

There are a number of situations you can borrow or modify from the HP books... - A friend is missing/needs rescuing but the Professors are as stumped as the students (except for the PCs who stumble upon an important clue). - An arch nemesis (another student) is plotting something naughty, but...

    What is OSR about?

John, I don't care if you use the word nostalgia in every sentence you ever post on ENWorld from now until the end of time. I'm not the word police and I'm not particularly offended by the word nostalgia even when people do use it pejoratively. Bullgrit expressed confusion about people's...

    What is OSR about?

Is it really that difficult to understand that years of people using it as a slight has given it that connotation? It's the equivalent of "video-gamey" for 3e and 4e. Video games in and of themselves aren't bad, but "video-gamey" is edition war shorthand for "your game sucks". Likewise...

    What is OSR about?

That's not exactly it. Again, not quite. I think a more apt analogy is that, you MIGHT BE idealizing Hawaii if you went there once a few years ago and remember enjoying it (note, MIGHT BE). However, It's very unlikely that you're idealizing it if you've gone there on vacation twice a year for...

    What is OSR about?

OS dogmatism isn't really the topic either, but you keep bringing it up. Just as Pathfinder dogmatism doesn't define Pathfinder fandom, OS dogmatism doesn't define the OSR.

    What is OSR about?

I think it's the "idealized" that people get stuck on. If I say I'm having fun playing 4e, nobody ever tells me that I'm "idealizing" my play experience. But if I'm having fun playing AD&D (i.e. actually playing, right now, at the present time, as in the guys came over last night for a game)...

    What is OSR about?

I think I may have gotten sidetracked and done a poor job of explaining my main point, which is that the reason "nostalgia" is considered a bad word by many OS enthusiasts is that it's been used in a pejorative sense (i.e. "Your enjoyment of OS games is based on self delusion and selective...

    What is OSR about?

That's a nice story in theory, but is that what really happened? I haven't, for example, heard any tales of OSR publishers seeing a spike in sales after 4e came out or OSR bloggers seeing a big spike in readership or OSR websites seeing a big influx of new posters. From my perspective, the OSR...

    What is OSR about?

I think the reason that word touches off so many strong reactions is that this... "The only way to overlook the glaring faults of (insert OS game here) is if you are looking at your experience through rose-colored glasses" ... has been a pretty common edition-warring tactic for many years...
