An Open Letter to the "OSR Blogosphere"

So you're telling a bunch of guys talking about gaming on their own private blogs they should stop because you, personally, disapprove... of what they post about gaming... on their own blogs... where you don't have to read it unless you specifically go to that blog and read it...? Really...

If WotC decided to revitalize and support AD&D, would you play/buy it?

In that case, count me as a "Wont' purchase/Won't play" vote. If I play AD&D, it will be the real thing. [Sean Bean]AD&D has no updates. AD&D needs no updates.[/Sean Bean]

If WotC decided to revitalize and support AD&D, would you play/buy it?

I own AD&D. I play AD&D. I have a whole slew of OSRIC products to choose from if I want new AD&D stuff. As far as AD&D is concerned, I don't care what WotC does (but I do loves me some 4e, so, you know, keep going with that!).

Cancelling a session / not attending a session.

I would find anything from "I'm dead" to "I don't want to" reasonable. I wouldn't be mad at the latter. Although, if the "I don't want to" excuse came up frequently (or the "I'm dead" excuse came up at all) I might talk to the group about someone else taking over as DM.

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

I would also recommend CZ1: Yggsburgh from Troll Lord Games. It's absolutely full of this kind of simulationist detail for life in a medieval town. I wouldn't expect this kind of thing for 4e, however, since the designers have specifically said that getting away from the "medieval Europe with...

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

Do you honestly need an entry in a book to allow your PCs to spend 10,000gp on jewelry? The single sentence you typed above holds, realistically, all the information you'd need to adjudicate such an act (i.e. Jewelry, cost: 10,000gp). What additional information could a rulebook possibly provide...

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

D&D has always been great at handling sub-optimized characters in an optimized group. They die. The player rolls up another PC. Repeat as needed. It's one of the simplest (and most edition consistent) mechanics in the game. :)

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

The thing is, non-magical personal items (as opposed to magic armor or castles) are just never going to cost enough to be relevant to the PCs overall wealth after about 2nd level. If my 6th level PCs want to carry around a crowbar, an axe and a bag of iron spikes as part of their "Dungeon Door...

What 4e Fluff do you Like?

Divine Power, Manual of the Planes and the two preview books I mention above are probably the best sourcebooks so far. There has been quite a bit of stuff scattered through several Dragon articles too.

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

To me it's not so much a philosophical anathema as an aesthetic rough spot that I'd like to polish off just for my own personal satisfaction. I'm not arguing that killing off the skill bonus provided by Thieves Tools would make the game inherently better. I'm arguing that killing off that aspect...

GF9 to produce official D&D stuff

The Alea Tools magnetic discs are exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about except that the magnetic discs don't stick to the bottom of the plastic DDM minis the way I'm imagining the "click-in-able" plastic ones could. The Alea Tools stuff is great and I'm surprised WotC haven't come up with...

GF9 to produce official D&D stuff

I have thought for some time now that WotC would be smart to create interlocking, round condition markers that fit directly under their DDM bases (or even click into the bases) so that a miniature and its attendant markers can be picked up and moved around as one piece during play. GF9 looks...

10 Campaign Settings: Which Ones Should I Get?

No, Troll & Toad has a reputation for screwing people on shipping. It's their right to charge what they want, but there is no question that they regularly overcharge for shipping.

What 4e Fluff do you Like?

I was really impressed with the mirror planes (Shadowfell and Feywild) and the well-explained intention that as heroes progress through the tiers they are expected to venture further afield among the planes. I really like what 4e did with Demons and Devils. I also like the Tiefling and...

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

I think that specific parts of the game created by one designer can certainly go against a philosphy espoused by other designers or the designers as a group. At any rate, I think all of the mundane items that give minor bonuses to skills are completely unnecessary and (while they in no way break...

Is too small of a sandbox the same as railroading?

Two points... 1 - No, you're not railroading. 2 - Your players sound like jerks.

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

Yep, that's exactly what I'm arguing against. I don't think it's a good idea for Thieves tools and I certainly don't want to see more of it. I don't think it's going to "break the game" in any reasonable sense of the word, but I definitely think that the equipment bonus for Thieves Tools goes...

GNS - does one preclude another?

I would suggest reading the two Forge threads that LostSoul linked to upthread if you haven't. They do a pretty good job of illustrating exactly why those "layers of flummery" are integral to the model as a whole and why their separation from the GNS portion is important.

Can we go back to smaller books?

Didn't one of the 3PP (Mongoose?) publish digest-sized versions of the 3e rulebooks? Those, at least, would help with the lugging and passing parts of Reynard's complaint.

    Return of the DonkeyHorse!

As soon as you equate the +5 bonus solely to items specifically carried or not carried by the character, the bonus is no longer abstract. So, yes, abstraction falls apart as soon as you stop thinking in the abstract. Vyvyan's point wasn't that the +5 bonus = an equipment bonus. It was that...
