He Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken

Yes and no- I would kinda like to see a bunch of mid level aristocrats having access to it, and then developing a wacked out social order involving hundreds of different aliases and extremely evasive greeting customs to prevent them from spying on each other. C'mon- that'd be rad.

He Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken

I'd put it as mid-level, and I'll explain why. I would like it to usable by mid-level adversaries to strike some fear into the hearts of players- it is a great campaign tool. It isn't that useful for players, because its effect is really quite arbitrary and entirely decided by the GM. He's...

    Just Plain Broken

I think the Thrallherd is actually broken, campaign-wise. Being able to ruin things in combat has a fairly limited impact compared to having a fully self-replenishing army of completely mind-controlled slaves.

Computers beat up my role player

Hey you whippersnapper, get off my volcano! Look, I've played a lot of MMOs. EQ, EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, SWG, whatever that one with 3 groups fighting is called (been a long time). Oh yeah, also Dofus and UO. That's 8. And every time, I've become bored after perhaps a month or two. I could...

Computers beat up my role player

You're probably not going to get a good story out of an MMO. You can have fun and everything, but "LOL my guild raided Ragnarosh last night it wuz EPIC!!! I got leet dropz" isn't a story.

    House rulebook finished. reviews welcome

Ah, fair enough! Can't argue with player preference, that's what the game's about, after all.

Helm of Opposite Alignment ... Think "A Clockwork Orange"

I can see a lot of interesting quests geared around this helm. As a cursed item for parties to find and get boned by, it's a piece of crap and breaks character conception rules badly- but as a plot point it's totally awesome. I especially see its use on captured fiends. You gain a powerful...

    House rulebook finished. reviews welcome

I'll take a look at it shortly. Alright I looked at it. It looks fine to me, but I have 2 questions/comments- 1)Why are you starting replacement characters with less character wealth? Dying is usually punishment enough, and you just make them more likely to die again under this system...

    Ranger Modification.

I disagree with the above poster. Losing your spellcasting and companion for bonuses to a few skills under specific circumstances is a net loss, not a gain. The only skill in that list which will retain its usefulness is spot; hide and move silently are rendered obsolete quickly by various...

Does social standing have a place in your game?

In D20, not so much with the background unless the campaign is based upon intrigue and so on. In this case, I'll be discussing roles, powers and responsibilities with my players. I do actually have a system I use for background- background is one of the 'big three' in character generation- it...

How much camp do you like in your games?

I would really hate myself if I took gaming too seriously, the entire notion of a bunch of dudes sitting around and pretending to be elves is inherently ludicrous. So camp it up!

    Smaller or bigger dungeons?

I dislike big dungeons for the simple reason that they are too great a time investment- not so much for myself, but for the players. While it is possible to keep changing it up to keep it interesting, it seems more realistic and entertaining to achieve that with multiple locations.

    Heroic (good) campaign suggestions.

Off the top of my head: -Participating in, and eventually leading an insurrection -A rescue team that tracks down and saves lost travellers and expeditions -Running a hospital -Good hearted bounty hunters, with a grizzled veteran boss who gives them briefings and sends them on missions...

    DM or GM?

I prefer GM for all cases. Also, I don't run D&D, I run D20. Even if I'm using the PHB and all the SRD stuff, I refer to it as D20. Mostly because there are rarely, if ever, any dungeons in my campaigns, and I don't like dragons. So there you go.

    Fixing the Assassin

To Imp: The only problem is that stripping 5 levels from the class and not changing death attack will make it really weak. You won't be able to kill anything - kinda eliminating the point of being an assassin. You can always change death attack to have a DC based on sneak attack dice (10 +...

Am I giving them enough treasure?

I CAN'T BELIEVE I READ THE WHOLE THING Scroll of speak with Mucus spirit? That would make it worth it for me, right there. Anyway, I dunno, instead of relying on a treasure generator, why not tailor the treasure to the players? Although I'd keep the frog stuff and the glass pineapple tree.

Mythical beasts that need more attention

Ogre Magi, which I guess would be Oni. I'd make them a player race too. Naga could use a do over as well, although... probably not as a player race.

    Embracing the standard fantasy tropes

All right, part 2! The kicker is that the consistency doesn't have to be immediately apparent. You only need sidenotes in case players ask, so you're not stuck with having to invent things to cover holes in the campaign. Of course this is true, but in my experience - especially when running...

    Embracing the standard fantasy tropes

Good discussion folks! Ah, the GNS. Actually I think the one which describes me best, personally, is an immersionist who craves new experiences. I can't argue against this, because it is 100% true. The thing is, when you are trying to simulate source material directly, you aren't really...
