    Killing the sense of wonder

In a way, I am asking the same question as this thread but inquiring paradoxically - i.e, studying what we do badly in order to do better. So... What kills the sense of wonder in your games? The GM? The Players? The ruleset? The lawnmower outside the window? Some examples of things that have...

    Insults!

From here: The example that follows is from Sir Thomas Urquhart’s translation of Rabelais’ Gargantua and Pantagruel, dated 1653, which draws heavily on vocabulary used in Scotland in his time: The bun-sellers or cake-makers were in nothing inclinable to their request; but, which was worse, did...

100 ways to engage the senses

So, from posts above we have 11. Extinguishing candles to represent loss of sanity and the approach of the end of humanity 12. Frayed lamp cords or wired chairs to evoke the sense of electrocution 13. Nerf guns to the face to create the sense of surprise and pain caused by a trap 14...

Dawn of a New Age - The Conversion of a 13-Year-Old Nephew

Nice, work man, reminds me of my first time playing basic D&D with my family! :)

Is too small of a sandbox the same as railroading?

There seems to have been a paradigm shift in the DM/PC dynamic over the years. From my vantage point, the DM's role seems to have moved back and forth from that of impartial 'referee', to omniscient world creator; periods where the DM was the omniscient storyteller and the PC's merely characters...

100 ways to engage the senses

The title says it all: How do you try to engage of the senses of your players to add flavour to your games? Do you draw on the full range of the character's senses (taste smell, hearing, touch, sight) when describing your world, or do you just tell them what they see?* What sort of props do...

Is too small of a sandbox the same as railroading?

It all sounds pretty disfunctional to me. Why are you even running a game for them, and why are they even playing in your game? I would say give up and go play on a playstation, frankly, because you seem to have reached a stage where your players objective appears to be "sabotage the game if...

    Dual-GMing

LOL, next you should do a "Joe Schmo" campaign, where everyone is secretly a GM except the one player

I want to be the best DM...

Well said, and I was thinking the same thing myself recently. Being the "best GM you can be" is like being the 'best husband you can be". Sure, people can give you advice about what worked in their marriages, and some of it will be good and bad, but ultimately it's all comes down to what works...

I want to be the best DM...

Thanks Amaroq. That is why I found the 'break the routine' model so effective. It's basically a tool you can use when you aren't feeling creative. It means you don't have to strive to come up with a truly original idea off the cuff, which is a blessing when you are feeling flat and uninspired...

I want to be the best DM...

To add to my earlier point about self improvement. Just remember that sometimes you need to allow yourself the freedom to not "be the best" and indeed, even to fail. Because sometimes focussing on "being the best" might not actually get you to your goal. Often you can end up trying too hard...

I want to be the best DM...

Playing under crappy GM's is useful of course- you learn what not to do, but playing under great GM's is what can really make a difference, if you can find one. A great GM opens your eyes to a broader world, shows you possibliities you never even thought were there. With regards to the OP...

    Tripod vs. the dragon

I have posted these before, but they crack me up. The first one is more D&D related, the second is still about gamers (of a sort) and is still funny. YouTube - Tripod - Dungeons and Dragons YouTube - Tripod Song

    March Fourth for GM's Day!!

Wow. I don't drop by ENworld much anymore - my gaming group has disbanded, and I have a baby on the way, but each year it get's to March Fourth and I think "I wonder how GM's Day is going, so I pop on over, and this year there is a massive banner at the top of the page with a cool logo...

    July 27. Gary Gygax Day?

July 27th is a better day, I think. Admittedly I am a little biased here, but ... A lot of people put a lot of work into getting GM's day up and running, and I am pleased to say that I think it has been a success. With all due respect to Gary, or perhaps because of my respect for Gary, I fear...

    July 27. Gary Gygax Day?

IMHO (for what it is worth) GM’s Day should stay GM’s Day. It will now, aptly or otherwise, also include thoughts of someone that many of think of as the Great GM in the sky. E.G.G.
