[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

We toss everything on top of the cloak, along with a small dagger for good measure, and then fall asleep still trying to decide whether to begin our mission in (95) Saven or (137) Seagate Island. Here’s everything I was able to find about Saven vs. Seagate Island in the lead-up to this...

    Independent Spaces for RPG Discourse

But we weren’t talking about search engines. We were talking about a forum, full of humans (and some bots now I guess), where Johnny can post the question “How far can a dwarf in platemail who is carrying a heavy load and has Fly, Haste, and Expeditious Retreat cast on him - move in one round...

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

If you’re referring to the rant about the gear-up scene — it’s The Sorcerer%27s Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)%27']there! Hahahahaha! Given what happens when Carr uses Polymorph Other — but I’ve said too much already. I do agree that “torpedo” is a weird analogy for 1d4+1 damage...

D&D General Learning from LFR: Encounter and Monster Examples to Steal for Your Game

I do have some issues with this map. Let's look at it again: One of the biggest complaints about LFR is that it far too frequently starts the PCs in "the penalty box" where they are tightly bunched. Not only crushed into fireball formation, but also stuck in an unfavorable position that no...

At which point you might drive yourself insane. And/or create some kind of temporal paradox where you cannot see the future, because you are looking at the future and not taking action in the present, which means that future doesn't come to pass, which means you could not have seen that future...

    [Fighting Fantasy] Bloodsword v2

Exactly! It's so over the top that it becomes a head-scratcher. There are lots of ways to deal with mischievous fairies in stories and books and games. "Crucify them on human bones!" is so far beyond the pale that it's a WTF moment.

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

Commentary and belated rant from section 121 wherein Carr gets his equipment on. I unironically enjoy this gear-up scene. It's a fun part of D&D. However…. We enter the FREE HUT that was formerly Landor's and now ours and sit down at the same table where our dad "conducted his research into...

What VTT(s) do you most dislike and why? (Defenders welcome to defend)

Lots of them are like this. They are living fossils of what software design was like in the bad old days. Apparently people are OK with that? Or there are no better alternatives? IDK.

What VTT(s) do you most dislike and why? (Defenders welcome to defend)

All of them have such awful user interfaces that fail to address the most obvious, core use cases that they literally make me angry. So all of them. I dislike all of the them most.

So, what was the deal with Zelazny's second Amber series sucking so badly?

For this series? Do you want to be the experimental subject I mentioned above @Distracted DM ? Then start with the Second Chronicles of Amber, https://a.co/d/fSDwV9H Otherwise for this series start with the first series, the first book, Nine Princes in Amber, https://a.co/d/j0uKchl — For...

Randomization vs. Narrative Control: Different Approaches to Storytelling in TTRPGs

The author (or authors) are very sloppy with their facts in the articles I’ve seen. These are less ‘articles’ and more ‘random hearsay about games a friend of a friend told me about’.

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

Commentary: Let's see, we have our list of "Lesser" spells that we can only use once each (even though this adventure lasts a week, because reasons); and then we have an entirely separate set of "Greater" spells that we can only use… once… each…. There is no game mechanical difference here...

[AD&D Gamebook] The Sorcerer's Crown (Kingdom of Sorcery, book 2 of 3)

Interlude - More Game Mechanics Let's flip back to the gamebook introduction to go over Carr's "Spellbook and Spells". We are informed that the entire adventure takes place in "one exhausting week of game time" during which Carr will not have time to restudy the spells he already knows. That's...

121 We enter the FREE HUT that was formerly Landor's and now ours and sit down at the same table where our dad "conducted his research into the magic of his ancestors, the sorcerer-kings of Bhukod." Ever since we acquired Landor's stuff five years ago, we've been translating from his coded...

Haha! Yeah, “breast” is one of those old-timey words that in the singular does mean chest area. It’s in one of my favorite quotes of all time, from a translation of the Iliad: “Iron in thy breast thy heart is.” - Hektor, to Akhilleus \m/ -_- \m/ METAL! Oh, Winny. Console yourself with...
