Letting Players Narrate in the Game?

This can definitely be the case, and I don't really see it as a bad thing. Some players would rather have no hand in it, and just see the story unfold and react to their actions. It can be a bit jarring as a player to come with both an action and a reaction. Part of the fun is not knowing what...

Essentials Rules Compendium preview copy in hand

I'm doubting the usefulness to your standard optimized Kensei or pit fighter. The fighter has to jump through a few hoops to get such an ability more than once per encounter and the damage will be pitiful with no intelligence mod and no implement. And if the fighter invests in those I'm tossing...

    Monster Vault

Can we put the 4.5 ... 'stuff' in one thread as opposed to bringing it up constantly in every essentials thread? It's related I guess but complaining of wizards lying in every essentials thread is definitely into threadcrap territory IMO.

    Can a swarm be grabbed?

You could hand-wave the use of a net I guess. The character pulls out the net when they grab the swarm and put it away as free action when the condition ends. And... it's big enough to work and stuff.

OMG Nightmare player Help advice pls

The husband is the DM and part host of the game it seems, so he's the one with the most power to initiate change in the group and perhaps the one the wife would most likely listen to. Not saying talking to her is wrong but that's why.

    Essentials - calling a spade a spade

It's not 4.5 because the essentials design philosophy coexists with the PHB design philosophy. That is, a fighter having at-wills mostly can sit next to the fighter with dailies at the table by the rules. The old fighter isn't "updated" to the new philosophy at all. It's a new line of books...

    Where to get individual minis

If you don't want to subscribe to a lot of different stores, ebay.com is a good choice. Look for mini options from the same seller so that they will combine shipping. I just bought ~15 minis from ebay.

    Compendium Stat Blocks...

Interesting. It's definitely been updated to a point because new books are in there, but it appears the compendium won't show the new format of monster statblock introduced in MM3. Sorry that was no help, but there is some confirmation for you.

    Homebrewed (Solo) Monsters vs Stun

Summoning more monsters when stun-locked could work if done interestingly. Perhaps the BBEG is maintaining a dark ritual that feeds him power, but also he keeps it within close control. Upon being stunned or knocked out he can no longer maintain his control and horrible demons spew forth in the...

    Fighter Slayer preview

Fair enough. I think the seeker concept is awesome and the mechanics are meh. I'm still enjoying my seeker thrower paragon though.

    Fighter Slayer preview

Slayer is meant to be striker, knight is defender. Mearls says role is assigned after the class concept is fully thought out rather than something the concept is built around in essentials. He says we can expect more of the dual role in the essentials sub classes but not as a rule, just as the...

First review of the new Red Box

Not playing a game because of the numbers used for stats?? Well, I was a little turned off by the low 1 for 1 stats in dogs in the vineyard.. I... Uh, guess. There is nothing special about an 18 in point buy.. So use a rolling variant so the first 5 minutes of the game is special again.

    Essentials: which new players?

D&d school are vaguely like Harry potter "subjects" .. Transfigurations are polymorph type spells.. Curses are.. Necromancy sometimes Children can no doubt relate to thAt with a some mind jiggering.

    Essentials: which new players?

If the original red box appealed to kids ( some of YOU guys) why wouldn't this red box be able to the same thing _especially_ if it harkens to rules you enjoyed 30 years ago, some of you as children? New generation can't handle it or what?

What do you think is wrong with rituals?

Magical items should have had a once per day ritual to use for free. That'd make magical items a bit more interesting and you'd see much more ritual use. In a good scenario where the PCs can actually fail they'll feel more inclined to use them. If failing the stealth challenge just means an...

Is WotC's policy of no 4.5 good or bad?

Yes, but essentials will probably 'do it' for me. Me and my brother have discussed how it would be cool to have the different power sources simply behave differently, much like psionics does/did (ignoring the problems with it), from the beginning. The new essentials sub-classes going back to...

    Will Essentials do well?

The new rogue and fighter subclasses being based on basic attacks as opposed to lots of encounter powers and dailies seems a good sign for significant change. System fundamentals will stay firmly the same though. I dunno; could be worth a glance even to people who dislike 4e fundamentally, also...

What Makes A Good Dungeon, and a Good Dungeon Campaign/Adventure?

Meaningful choices for the players that have impact and reaction within the game world is good advice no matter the game. The only dungeon I've run recently had one very important aspect: NPC's you can talk to. It was a mansion full of undead and ghosts, some willing to rebel against their...

    D&D 4E D&D 4e Combat Tracker Updated

I'll pitch in an answer too: the tracker, assuming you use DDI or input monster data yourself, could have info you dont want the delegated player to have access to. The good side is that you can shelve the Monster manuals except for pictures and fluff. It will track combat as well having all the...

    Assassin's Shroud & Stealth, hidden & invisibility

That makes the Swordmage/Paladin mark, which is all part of one effect, seem a lot worse than the fighter mark, if you're supposed to play the monsters as not knowing about combat challenge until they see it.
