    Headed for rune

A quick excel doc that makes sudoku type puzzles. They are pretty handy game puzzles if you replace the numbers with symbols (think dwarven runes) and it makes the puzzle A LOT harder. It is always nice when people grumble to be able to say that you based it off of an "easy sudoku" that you then...

Rebutting a fallacy: why I await 5e (without holding my breath)

I'm not sure what you mean, but I'm pretty sure it isn't accurately responding to what I said. Why would I want to incorporate the weaknesses of 3e onto 4e? No one is abject labeling weaknesses as strengths. I don't even know what a "man flaw" is but I'm guessing it is a humorous typo...

Rebutting a fallacy: why I await 5e (without holding my breath)

I cannot begin to tell you how much I believe this statement. It also isn't surprising. This thread is basically four pages of people disagreeing with each other over how to phrase the idea that "different things appeal to different folks." To be fair, this thread, along with about three others...

What's more important: core rules or adventures?

Honestly, the most important thing is probably marketing. RPGs need a fan base and that base comes with a brand and solid marketing. D&D is the king of that. To adapt this theory to your question, it'd have to be "core rules" because core rules are the publication that gets a big marketing push...

    Headed for rune

This idea was originally posted by a different blogger but I decided to see how far I could run with it. The goal is to find ways to organize random generation tables such that a relatively small set of ideas can organically populate many random tables through their relationships. I think it is...

In Defense of the Theory of Dissociated Mechanics

Right. That wasn't intended to be replacing the term, but the meaning of what the term is trying to address. Hence the phrase "What if we changed the thrust from "dissociated mechanics" to something like..." It keeps the term but loses the baggage.

In Defense of the Theory of Dissociated Mechanics

I think this is insightful and I agree that an article with baggage is an issue. What if we changed the thrust from "dissociated mechanics" to something like... "Game mechanics that help align the vision of the player to the reality of the character can oftentimes facilitate the roleplaying...

    Headed for rune

Two new posts. The first continues the discussion building on taking a second look at stats and pursues a different approach on encumbrance. The design goal was to make it quick and light but, when encumbrance ought to matter, suddenly allow it to organically become more strict. I think it does...

    Advice for Boosting a FLGS

My interpretation of a lot of the recommendations for boosting a gaming store is that people are aching for a community and the FLGS has the potential to be the hub of that community. Sometimes you do that by hosting events, sometimes you do that by making people feel like members (i.e...

    Operation: Power Level Gary

Has anyone figured out how many times you have to give XP before you can cycle back? It took me like two-weeks to be able to hit up Gary again (but then I don't post *that* often). Incidentally, at the time of this posting, Gary is at 1143 and needs 198 to seize the #3 place.

Haha. Thanks for that. I did sort of feel awkward posting an update right below your comment when the spam had been removed. Now I feel like I can power on.

Pathfinder 1E Paizo Copyright Issues at Obsidian Portal?

In my initial post I said it seemed out of character for Paizo but I'd give them the benefit of the doubt until more info was available. Since I believe Erik's input, I don't even have any issue with how they went about it. Asking someone to take something down is totally legit. Even a "polite"...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo Copyright Issues at Obsidian Portal?

My point is that the burdens are hugely disproportionate on the two parties. The copyright holder doesn't draft an entirely new complaint. They tell someone (probably an intern, aka "minion") to spend a day updating an old complaint the partner drafted some time ago. I've been that minion...

    Headed for rune

The conversation on stats continues with alternate mechanisms to encourage folks to invest in stats on the non-modifier increasing levels. In essence, creating strata such that there are no dead levels for ability scores. The goal is to create a laundry list of possibilities, so any potential...

    "He's beyond my healing ability..."

I think if a rule stands in the way of the narrative, it is a bad rule. As has been pointed out, these rules can easily be ignored. However, as has also been pointed out, ignoring the rules often ticks players off. Whether or not they are right to be ticked off, they are still ticked off and...

What if 5e is a board game?

I think 5e will likely contain many elements (or support for many elements) that are similar to board games. It will not, however, be a board game. Things like tiles, miniatures, and power cards are useful for providing rules to players in a timely fashion to when those rules are needed. As a...

Who puts the "class" in Armor Class?

There is something to be said for reasonably evocative but sort of vague terms, especially if you can imbue those terms with meaning to the community that uses them. Armor Class and Hit Points are entirely clear (at this point) and flexible because they are ambiguous. If Gygax foresaw this...

    Playing without Miniatures

The no-minis but minis are still useful for illustration of complex situations is the general theme I've been using in developing zones. To date I'm pleased with the results.

Pathfinder 1E Paizo Copyright Issues at Obsidian Portal?

The problem, though, is that it is damn hard for a normal person to defend themselves. The safe harbor is an affirmative defense, which means you have to understand and argue it--that costs money. With Bill S978, the penalties go beyond cash and become felonies. Felonies. All the copyright owner...

So how do you level? Why?

We tend to level up every few sessions without paying much attention to XP. The usual rate is once every three sessions, with maybe a shorter duration if it coincides with the completion of a big plot arc. We tend to enjoy the 1-12ish range the most, so leveling up every 2-3 sessions gives us...
