    D&D 5E (2014) Rating Wizard Traditions at 2nd Level

Arcane ward - Gives you quite a lot of hitpoints per day... IF you cast nothing but abjurations. "The wizard is low on hit points" does not tend to be a prime motivator for a party to rest in my experience, so this is not that great. 3 stars. Minor conjuration - Anything you create has to fit...

    More Dynamic Fighting Styles

Sword and board requires a feat, so isn't a fighter ability as such. I'd like to see one of these styles give something more interesting for twf as well, but it would have to be a "when you use your bonus action to make a twf attack...". EK's war magic has a bunch of problems that make it...

D&D 5E (2014) Planar Ally is it the most powerful conjuration spell in the game? How do you run it?

Heck, it could even be a ritual and it would be more-or-less fine as long as the DM is harsh on bargaining.

UA: New Race Options, Eladrin and Gith

An ability better than one of the best 2nd level spells (because it has no components) given out each short rest... That seems way too good.

D&D 5E (2014) Planar Ally is it the most powerful conjuration spell in the game? How do you run it?

I think the spell should be on everyone's lists. There's not a class that doesn't have someone somewhere that would be willing to bargain for aid.

    More Dynamic Fighting Styles

It's quite different though - duelist only works on a single opponent, requires a bonus action and is more powerful, while defense is a flat +1 ac all the time. I really like these. I think that fighters were really lacking in a use for their bonus action, and in general were defensively weak...

D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing ability score prerequisites—required for balance or an unnecessary hurdle?

Knowing about what you're selling, and being in the same circles as your target market are both incredibly potent assets for a salesman. Sure, if you give up engineering and take up a job as a sales clerk in a fashion house you.... will probably still end up fixing the POS system, or a door, or...

D&D 5E (2014) Planar Ally is it the most powerful conjuration spell in the game? How do you run it?

I find more subtle devils and demons to be more effective. Even if a character summons a demon and has it kill evildoers... that just means they cannot be redeemed, and flow straight to the lower planes. I'm sure I've read a classic story to that effect (in which a man saves his own life in a...

D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing ability score prerequisites—required for balance or an unnecessary hurdle?

This was basically my point. If it's not played out, then there's good odds are you're the only player at the table who even reads your background. And if your "failed wizard" background is down to the arcana skill? I think you're going to be reaching for it to make an impact. Can we fix that...

D&D 5E (2014) Planar Ally is it the most powerful conjuration spell in the game? How do you run it?

My guess is that the writers started with most of the planar summoning spells being on the wizard and warlock lists, then had a PR crisis over demon summoning as a PC ability and removed them.

D&D 5E (2014) [Tomb of Annihilation] Less absolute Curse?

... and it feels dissonant when things mess with the afterlife like that. Doubly so in a universe where the goddess of magic has expressly forbidden high level magics in order to protect her own position already... It would seem to suggest that Karsus' folly could be duplicated by the simple...

D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing ability score prerequisites—required for balance or an unnecessary hurdle?

Except the rules actually have them stop progression on one of the two paths. You somehow have to be intelligent to stop learning new spells. No, it would still be stupid. You don't just instantly forget things because you choose to learn new ones. If someone is struggling at an engineering job...

D&D 5E (2014) Teleport /fly /misty step the bane of cool dungeon design is RAW in 5E

Jumping now qualifies for the rule of cool? Well... whatever. He spent resources on the ability to jump whenever, wherever and however he wanted. He lost nothing by making the jump. First up - yes, I can picture in my mind a holy warrior disintegrating into a thousand shards of light and...

D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing ability score prerequisites—required for balance or an unnecessary hurdle?

First up, it applies to int 12 as well. Now you have to study magic for 4 more levels, and get more intelligent in order to give to magic. Secondly how does it make sense that being unable to stop studying magic is one of the biggest drawbacks? A wizard gets flexibility and offensive combat...

D&D 5E (2014) [Tomb of Annihilation] Less absolute Curse?

There's a difference between doing bad stuff and subverting the afterlife.

D&D 5E (2014) [Tomb of Annihilation] Less absolute Curse?

So... the soulmonger is literally stealing souls from the gods, but the gods aren't just directly interfering? Why wouldn't Mystra just make it not work?

D&D 5E (2014) Multiclassing ability score prerequisites—required for balance or an unnecessary hurdle?

Pros of the current ability score requirements: People who want to multiclass get slightly less freedom when doing so. Cons of the current ability score requirements: People who want to pick up a level in a class because it's story appropriate are usually prohibited from doing so. Everybody is...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rethinking immunities & resistance

I'd much rather see resistance revert to prior editions' "subtract a flat number from the damage" (which lets fire resistant creatures do things like sleep in hot coals, or cook food without utensils etc), and then remove immunity, replacing it instead with "really, really high resistance". So...

    D&D 5E (2014) [ToA] Heat & Heavy (armor)

Except as soon as you play with someone who HAS experienced the scenario you cover, the game suddenly drops from heroic to comical. If a DM said to me that my character was going to keel over from strolling about in 30C weather because it's really hot, I'd laugh in his face. The concept is...

D&D 5E (2014) House Rule for Subdual, is it fair?

Your line was "what sort of character would anyone want to spare people all the time?" My answer is that if you're good, On fine grained matters, perhaps, and the interplay of hitpoints, attack rolls and unknown stats does a pretty good job to avoid (say) having a character attack another...
