As a DM, do you let PCs precisely "place" areas of effect for spells?

Sure! IMO, D&D is a "heroic" game, so friendly fire doesn't happen as much as it would "real life". Miniatures, in fact, are an abstract representation of combat. No one's actually standing still attacking and parrying. Everyone's moving about, ducking, dodging, taking steps, that sort of...

    (OT) what system?

Do a search on "Paranoia Online" for a Paranoia website. Also, if you like a "narrativist" game (where players can create the story), see if Donjon or Soap might work for you. Reviews are on RPGnet. Finally, for d20, there's the SnarfQuest Worldbook. Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

    Halfling PC behaving like Kender

Use it as a plot hook. PC steals from NPC, NPC tosses a Geas or Quest on him. Part of the Geas / Quest is that everyone but the PC gets a share of the loot. Killing's so 2e. (: 3e has all those useful non-lethal damage rules. Think "101 Things to do with an Unconscious Hobbit"! Cedric. aka...

    We are the Gamers

Can't wait for the D&D Mass Combat book. And those prepainted miniatures! Finally, I can have those orcs actually attack the village the PCs are defending...! Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

    How many City Guard?

"Enough to keep the PCs in line." (: Ambient Press' (?) "Everyone Else" actually has three or so types of town guards, from seasoned veterans to guys carring pointy sticks. I used to just have the town guards show up when the PCs were causing too much trouble. Funny, how they always did it...

    3e too complicated ?

I liked the SAGA system. Only the players have to deal with the rules. GM-challenges, like NPCs, were just difficulty numbers. To some extent, the Skill rolls do this. A GM can just set a target number to, say, convince an NPC, and the PC rolls against his skill. Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

I got my copy of EN World Player's Journal!!

Re: big kudos Thanks -- Unfortunately, I don't have the patience to design an adventure, but if The Journal has a "Hook, Line, and Sinker" column like Shadis had, I'd be interested. Actually, if the Journal is looking for a reviewer who can make deadlines (: drop me a line. One random thought...

To PDF adventure publishers: Add counters! (:

Now that D&D miniatures are on the way (huzzah!), it's gonna be a little obvious when the DM doesn't have the right miniature for a critter in an adventure. ("Uh... that's an ankheg. Yeah, that's it.") One random thought, particularly for adventure PDF publishers, is to contact makers of...

    Publisher Opinions of FFE Events?

Betcher kid doesn't inappropriately quote EnWorld reviewers, either. (; Dunno -- If JW whinges so much about the OGL/SRD/BLT/PDQ, mebbe he should design his own fantasy RPG. I mean, nobody **owes** him the right to take advantage of the d20 bandwagon. Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

    Are reviewers evil?

Agreed -- Or at least the RPGnet forums will agree! I've read RPGnet review forum comments that criticized a reviewer if he playtested a product. But WizarDru is right. Robin Law's Guide to Good Gamemastering says that 70% of one's roleplaying experience is the group, only 30% the rules. That...

    Have You Played Clerics?

Darn tootin' (: Fave quotes from the 1e days: 1. "AAAH! OUR ONLY CLERIC IS DEAD!!!" 2. "NO!!! DON'T LET THE CLERIC ENTER COMBAT!!!" Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

so, exactly how evil are we talking here? (kinda long)

Picked this one up from Chaimail Bikini's (!) "Call of Duty": Alignment is based on your overall behavior, not a specific incident. So, yeah, killing a defenseless being would be evil, but it shouldn't affect your alignment. Or, in other words, a LG diety is more interested in his servants...

I know my refund amount, what should I buy?

Reduce your withholding and/or increase your capital gains / dividend income. Remember, it's not a refund. It's an interest-free loan where you get to be the lender! Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

Can you buy Pre Painted Mini's online?

If you're talking about retail product (MageKnight and D&D Miniatures), and can place an order of at least $100, definitely look into Potomac Distribution: www.potomacdist.com Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

How come no reviews of ENWorld Players Journal?

The short review? Buy it. The material, from art and layout, to supplementary D&D mechanics and adventures, is as professional as any gaming magazine I've seen. The format of the book reminds me of the TSR Dragon Magazines: black and white paper sorta-stiff pages. It's not the flimsy glossy...

I got my copy of EN World Player's Journal!!

The grabber ape is frickin' hilarious. I really think you should write a town adventure in which two important and physically dangerous city factions (say... the thieve's guild and the wizard's guild (: are about to blow the town asunder because these apes have been stealing magical research...

I got my copy of EN World Player's Journal!!

Stuff's good. If you smacked a TSR Dragon-reading grognard on the back of the head and shoved this book in his hands when we woke up, he wouldn't noticed the difference. Well, except that "3rd edition" nonsense. (: Cedric. aka. Washu! ^O^

    Are reviewers evil?

Well, if FFE put up a wad of cash so RPG sites could afford editors, sure, there would be better reviews. I mean, even those who receive complimentary review copies end up writing for less than the three-cents-per-word standard (and retail product sure isn't the same as cash). "Bad advertising...

    Worried about new minis?

Can you really do that? I haven't checked closely, but, IIRC, $2.50 for an unpainted metal miniature is on the low side of average. I've also seen prepainted metal miniatures in unrandomized packs selling for $25 for four miniatures (?). I'll check again. All I know is that, at those prices...
