    D&D 5E (2014) Training and Downtime

My. I wonder if there is a game where one of the central conceits to tell lifelong stories, using downtime to achieve that ;)

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Officially they are balanced and are optional to allow the pre-3e fans to be happy. Multiclassing (and pre-4e fans) are why characters are so weak at levels 1-3 so multiclassing is also theoretically balanced.

    D&D 5E (2014) Training and Downtime

Downtime is what happens when your PCs aren't saving the world or killing monsters for their treasure. It's what the fighter has when everyone else is creating magic items and learning new spells. No, you aren't abad person if you've never had any. But what editions have you played out of interest?

D&D 5E (2014) Designer apathy and sunk costs, The reason the sorcerer is doomed to uncanny valley one-trick-ponieness.

Here's a quick homebrew. Write the word "sorcerer" on your character sheet but actually play a wizard. Replace the word spellbook with "Arcane Secrets". Instead of studying your spellbook each day you meditate on the arcane secrets of the world. Otherwise prepare spells as normal. Use Charisma...

    D&D 5E (2014) Training and Downtime

I'm aiming to get the players to get day jobs and so going adventuring is what they do in their downtime with roughly 4-6 days a month spent adventuring. This is to try to combat the 0 to legend in 1 month effect that can often happen. So 1 in game year could roughly cover 12 levels. In this...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

I got that. My response was equally insincere ;) The solution being proposed to having an overpowered ability, is for the DM to go out of their way to nerf the player playing the character who dared to take an ability that their DM said would be acceptable. When we get overpowered spells, we...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

1 in 4 fights of being nothing but a liability? I'd definitely want to bring a good book if I was playing a Wizard at your table. Yes, unlimited opportunity attacks is much better. On it's own it's fine. But in a game where feats are allowed it most certainly does need fixing. I expect feats...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Here's an alternate fighting style that doen't synergize so well with PM+Sentinel and has a less cooky name. Defender. When you hit a creature with a melee attack, the target becomes marked. Until the end of your next turn you have advantage when making an opportunity attack against a target...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

So the tradeoff pre-Tunnel Fighter was that you sacrificed 2 feats and could only use PM+Sentinel once a round. In order to get to use this ability as many times as you want, you simply have to give up +1 to AC. -1 AC for the ability to have unlimited AoOs that can force someone to cease...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

Polemaster and Sentinel were clearly balanced around the idea of 1 AoO per round. Tunnel Fighter breaks that balance and so all three options need to be reevaluated. I don't see any harm in any discrete mechanic. But the combo (as is always the case) does allow for much more powerful options...

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

My reading of this, given the context it's in, it only allows free AoOs against marked creatures. This is more restrictive than the tunnel fighter, which (IMO) shows something is terribly wrong with the tunnel fighter.

Unearthed Arcana Light, Dark, Underdark - November's Unearthed Arcana

And this is a good reason not to allow multiple OAs in a way that is so open ended as the tunnel fighting style. I'd rather have the DMG's Mark mechanic be available as a fighting style before I allow Tunnel Fighter. Not a fan. It also has scaling (more attacks = more AoOs) which AoOs are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Access to Races in a Campaign

Because their proud warriors were filled with rapists and pillagers who enslaved the border races to allow civilian dragonborn to move onto the fertile land and setup their own farms and villages?

    D&D 5E (2014) Access to Races in a Campaign

I have never seen someone be coached through DMing in one game (let alone their first game) and then suddenly be a DM capable of running an enjoyable game with no prep work between the two games. If your area does have such DMs then I am jealous. You didn't say "Some people will have their...

Nor have I. I have had one player whose annoying tendencies were exaggerated ten fold by 1 particular race though.

    D&D 5E (2014) Access to Races in a Campaign

I have seen plenty of people turn up to a D&D game, failed to have read a single rule, and yet by the end of one session be able to play the game and contribute to everyone's enjoyment. DMing takes more practice than this so therefore it does take more effort than playing. Unless a DM can turn...

    D&D 5E (2014) Access to Races in a Campaign

I think the implication that any DM can run an enjoyable game with no more time invested than what occurs at the table with the players is a disservice to any DM that doesn't actually have the skill to do this. I've tried to run games with no prep time and I can safely say the game WAS NOT as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Access to Races in a Campaign

The difference between "a bit outside of that" and "doesn't remotely fit the campaign" is in the eye of the beholder. You've used a lot of words but you've just told me (as the hypothetical eager player) that I don't get to play a Cleric of Waukeen which was the first idea I was really excited...

    D&D 5E (2014) Access to Races in a Campaign

This might work great for games where there is no pre-established setting and it's made up on the spot, but this is where a lot of us are getting disconnect. We wait until we find out about the game before we make a character. So this would never actually happen. After all if I say "Would you...

D&D Does Digital Part III: PDFs

Removing the PDFs was always about trying to kill 3.5e by removing all support it could for that edition and never had anything to do with piracy. Every single 4e product was made available by pirates.
