    Low Fantasy Gaming RPG

On the contrary, I'm glad to hear it! If you get a game going, I'd love to hear how it goes :D

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: "Greyhawk" Initiative

I believe you just declare "move and melee" and roll 1d6 + 1d8 and then you work out the details when your turn comes up

    D&D 5E (2014) UA: "Greyhawk" Initiative

I like this variant better than standard D&D init - more random, more dangerous - which 5e sorely needs - and I like how small damage dice weapons are faster. Spells are already pretty weak in 5e however, also lumping them with d10 init and interrupted by damage is too much. Would've worked...

    D&D 5E (2014) I'm really hating Constitution right now

you fix this by rolling for stats and avoiding cookie cutter builds. If you want to maintain intra party balance - simply let any player use any other player's array, wiht a small (1d3?) penalty to differentiate them/reward the original player

WTF is "cold iron", and why's it so special?

As I understand it cold iron is iron, just another name for it. In LFG however I made it: Weapons forged of cold iron (the oldest and purest iron ore, mined deep and sometimes exhibiting mild ferromagnetism) are best against Demons and Undead As a means of bypassing immunities without needing a...

D&D 5E (2014) Resting and the frikkin' Elephant in the Room

You are right, 5e overnight full heal and refresh stuffs up attrition a lot and makes most wilderness treks and city adventures a cakewalk (nova, travel, rest, nova, travel, rest). It's a long time problem. Yes time constraints can help, but as you note, that becomes artificial after a while...

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

Yep. They f*cked it up for exactly the reasons you suggest. Removing finesse weapons, and removing crossbow expert (negating disad in melee shooting) would help a lot. Personally I also think if you miss shooting into melee, there should be a chance of hitting a friend in the same melee (most...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fleeing

Yeah I mean there needs to be a cost, and ideally (I think) the chance of escape should be good but not guaranteed. So there is a risk to using it, but players know it's in their back pocket if they really need it. And the looser you get with "balanced encounters", the more they'll need it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fleeing

To "break" from combat, in 5e, I would go with something like roleplay a bit to convince the GM that escape is possible. If ok, then make athletics check (or similar). Then decide if you need to use chase rules. If not, gain exhaustion level, but you escape (ie escape with a cost). If you do...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fleeing

Because if the monsters have a faster movement rate, escape generally wont be possible (barring magic like teleport, invisibility perhaps, etc). Of course you can still use chase rules etc as well if you want an exciting escape...

D&D 5E (2014) the dex warrior - why make a strength based one?

You are right. Dex is the god stat in 5e. The best solutions imo: (i) no finesse weapons (all melee weapons use Str) and no crossbow expert feat (ie no way of eliminating disad if the archer gets caught in melee). Then both Str weapons and Dex ranged attackers have their usefulness/place.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fleeing

Yep the lack of a formal Party Retreat rules is a major flaw of 5e. A number of modern games have such a rule, including 13th Age and Low Fantasy Gaming rpg. Earlier D&D also had a retreat rule (see D&D Cyclopedia) but alas it was lost around 3rd edition, I think. Which was a big mistake. A...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you, as a player, judge "appropriate" difficulty?

It's actually really easy, provided your ruleset has a formal Party Retreat rule of some kind (preferably with a cost, but a good chance of success). You then simply tell the party there are giants involved, or dragons, or ghosts, or whatever - and if they get up to their neck in level draining...
