    Why I dislike Milestone XP

I agree with the OP. I think AP's are the bane of RPGs. I am very much in favour of unrelated, episodic adventures, and letting the PCs roam free in a sandbox (well, you can pull parts of an AP out and drop them into a sandbox, that's cool, but actually running them from level 1 - 20 is just...

Agree to disagree I guess :P

D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with stupidly high rolls.

In a game where most enemies have a PP in the early teens, a spell that adds +10 to a stealth roll is, it seems to me, obviously broken. It's partly PP's fault, and partly the utterly massive +10 bonus fault (which affects the whole party, no less). There is no need for the spell. Simply use a...

D&D 5E (2014) Dealing with stupidly high rolls.

Pass without trace is broken, really. +10 party wide is ridic. Certainly tons better than invisibility with the way 5e stealth works (ie poorly). Stealth rogues with expertise are borked if you use passive perception (which is broken), but even if you dont use PP, it's still very OP.

What are the ability *scores* used for in 5e?

Very little. It's one of the failings of 5e. In older dnd , attribute checks were made against your score, eg want to break down a door, roll d20 and get your str score or less. Every point of every attribute mattered, so Int 8 was very different to Int 13, as opposed to a -1 or a +1 against an...

Anyone else tired of the miserly begrudging Rogue design of 5E?

I've played a 5e thief rogue and found it excellent fun. Their abilities are "always on", they dont need short rests or long rests to refresh their abilities. I dont think they need any buffing. Of course we play without the broken -5/+10 feats (broken) and no paladins (borderline broken).

    AD&D 1E Mearls on AD&D 1E

Roll equal or under was as early as basic. It's one of those things dnd should have stuck with; it made your stats mean something, rather than mere modifier generators and not referred to ever again. Its superior to the roll high DC system in multiple ways. Alas, the devs went with a unified...

The Difficulties Of Running Low Magic Campaigns

To answer the OP, low magic campaigns work excellent with the right system. They are one of my favourite kinds of games, because they make magic feel "magical" again. I dont think 5e works for low magic however, well, not without removing or modding 75% of it (at which point you're not playing...

Do You Often Get Beyond Mid-Level Play When RPGing?

Only once got past 13th level. the teen levels are a different kind of game. And not for the better.

Single mechanics that hurt an otherwise good game

For 5e (1) too much hit die healing (2) too many death saves (3) passive perception (4) concentration being broken by damage AND limited to one spell at a time (should have been one or the other). Also cantrips.

Does Adulthood Change the RPG Experience Much?

Yes. It changes it for the better.

TPK: Should I let it happen? Am I being fair?

Implement a formal party retreat rule with a cost, if you dont have one already. Then go to town on them. If they dont run, it's on them.

Critical Role EN World's Critical Role Roundup 001

Those sad crits are why I prefer max damage plus half level. You know you'll always do more than a normal hit, and it works well even with a smaller weapon such as a dagger.

Narrating Hit Points - no actual "damage"

I could never run the game the way the OP does with zero physical impacts. My preference is the opposite. If an attack roll is a hit, I will always describe it as a hit of some kind, even if it just bangs into your armour and causes pain, or a bruise, or scrape, or cut or whatever. Little bangs...

Suppose we substituted 3d6 for a d20 roll?

Pretty sure this is what GURPS uses. 3d6 roll under system. By using 3d6 instead of d20 roll under (which older dnd used), you will get more average results towards the middle, reducing randomness and making the outcome more predictable. It will give you a less swingy game, which may or may not...

    D&D 5E (2014) A problem with legendary actions

Why not just give the dragon an attack in between every PC turn? Why do they need to cost action points, or whatever? If the GM wants to spread the attacks around the party, fair enough. If the dragon wants to focus fire the warrior/mage/cleric whoever, also fair enough imo.
