Do You Use Your RPG Rules as Written?

Yes, I use my RPG rules as written. But also, I don't use my RPG rules as written.

    Standing and fighting

Yep. It varies by group, of course, but combat is such a huge part of D&D that if the characters avoid combat, the players are missing out on the game they specifically gathered together to play. It makes for an interesting disconnect between the desires of players and the likely desires of...

Is your D&D campaign a game or a story?

It's mostly equal parts game and story for me, but the story is only there to serve the game. If push comes to shove, game wins.

    The all mighty box text

Even though I rarely read it verbatim, I like boxed text because it makes a clear distinction between the player and dm information. Without it, you need to spend more time parsing the text on the page, identifying what you should or shouldn't reveal to the players.

Do RPGs' Wargaming Aspects Overshadow RPing?

For what it's worth, wikipedia has separate entries for "wargame" and "miniature wargaming." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wargame http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniature_wargaming

Why would you want to play *that*??

Wanting to kick but is a perfectly valid motivation for D&D character creation.

    Dragon/Dungeon Survey Online

Where would you put metal, if not in "Rock/Pop"? It's both of those.

Why would you want to play *that*??

This makes no sense at all- D&D happens to support the style of gaming the two of you disagree with very well. Wargames don't even have systems for creating characters, let alone systems for twinked out templated characters with cool powers.

    Ptolus - Support

This is what Ptolus is. Complete adventure material for levels 1-20 and one of the most detailed RPG cities ever, all in one giant book.

    Ptolus - Support

Put me in the "what more could you possibly want?" camp.

    D&D Technology

I'm not usually bothered by this sort of thing... but demonstrators picketing with signs in Freeport got my goat, as did the city's late 19th/early 20th century style journalism industry. But these are more cultural anachronisms then technological ones.

    Politics interfering with gaming

Take the high ground- when the other guy brings up politics, just smile and nod. The only thing compelling you to respond is pride. Arguing back doesn't serve any practical or moral purpose, you're just butting heads, and furthering the disruption of the game.

To go or not to go....

Speaking not as a parent, but as a former child- In ten years, when he's moved miles away from home, will you be able to remember why it seemed so important that you deprive yourself of this time spent together at Gen Con? Something to think about!

The Trend from Prestige to Base

The players in my group will barely even look at non-core base classes. One of them even insisted (twice) that Complete Divine didn't have any base classes, and wouldn't believe that it did until I showed him the pages. This was a book he owned. They love prestige classes, though, and pretty...

Is evil the opposite of good?

This question was prompted by the Jack Bauer thread. In D&D terms, is evil the opposite of good? The standard reasoning doesn't treat them as opposites- performing good acts only to help obtain a neutral goal wouldn't make you good, but performing evil acts only to help obtain a neutral goal...

    Is Jack Bauer LG?

I'd say Jack Bauer is lawful, because (with some exceptions) he values the well being of society over the well being the individual. This is why he doesn't have a problem with torture- the rights of person he's torturing are superseded by his desire to protect the larger population. I wouldn't...

    Agianst the Giants

On the other hand, a 10 ft grid works great if you're using Dwarven Forge terrain.

Anyone glanced at the new Character Sheets on the WotC site?

For those of you who say the new sheets are ugly, what do you mean by this? I've just re-looked over them, and they still just look like character sheets to me. The design is simple, and has little embellishment, but I'm just not seeing the ugly.

    Mechanics vs. Flavor text

How so? This is the underlying philosophy of effect based systems like HERO, BeSM, and Mutants & Masterminds. Keeping the description separate from the effects gives GMs and players the ultimate flexibility to generate mechanics for whatever fluff they have in mind. It's a lot more work, though.
