Converting First Edition monsters from DRAGON magazine

Huz-ZAH! :D I dunno if ranks in Ride would really fit... maybe Climb or Balance (like a mountain goat?) instead?

Re: prehistoric bears... I'd suggest making the arctodus a variant on the dire bear, but the agriotherium and the sarkastodon variants on the modern brown bear from the MM, since they're not particularly big by modern standards.

Actually, the megaloceros is the Irish deer. Same goes for the phororhacos and the terror bird -- same critter. ;)

Name the most evil character you've ever read/watched! [possible spoilers]

Princess Chalchiunenetzin from Gary Jennings's novel Aztec. The fifteen-year-old bride of King Nezahualpili of Texcoco, the daughter of the Aztecs' King Ahuizotl. Convincing her husband that she was merely an innocent young girl, she seduced young palace servants and coerced them into coming...

On the "beast of Eibon", the fella was mixing up the ring of Eibon, an artifact that plays a part in the adventure, and the Beast of Averoigne. It played a part in the adventure, I don't know if it was given stats in the module (might have been left up to the DM). It came directly from "The...

I got some weird looks lugging around a hardcover copy of Aztec, yeah.

The yaggol hasn't been converted yet, nope. Re: Archrilmani... Planescape MCA 2 noted that the rilmani are ruled by a governing council known as the Concordinach, made up of the most powerful specimens of each type of rilmani, so an Archrilmani doesn't really fit with precident. Plus, having...

    Converting monsters from Dungeon Magazine

Yeah, I can confirm that there's no Mountains of Gesh in the Known World, or the rest of Mystara.

The phthisic is in the Psionics Handbook. I remember that the gohlbrorn was a kind of a miniature bulette, but what were the illithocyte and the voor larva? They sound interesting.

    Favorite scenes from cartoons? [spoilers]

Classic Warner Bros.: -- The early Daffy Duck cartoon in which Daffy, for no apparent reason, starts leaping around the wetlands singing, "The Merry Go Round Broke Down" -- The Wile E. Coyote cartoon with all the malfunctioning catapults. -- Duck Twacy, Private Eye. -- DUCK DODGERS in the 24th...

Justice League Unlimited 12/4/04: Homage to the Super Friends

Ohdeargod. The Superfriends? Amanda Waller? Maxwell Lord? All in one episode? Man! I so regret not keeping up with this show. The didn't have, um... Wendy and Marvin... did they?

    Which ranged weapon(s) do(es) your D&D character(s) use?

I haven't played in a while, but my last character was a dwarf fighter who specialized in composite shortbow. He also carried a hand axe.

Converting First Edition monsters from DRAGON magazine

Huzzah! Lubin, right. That's the variant I was thinking of. For type, I'd suggest Fey. I first heard of the creature in a book on fairies (Faeries, by Brian Froud and Alan Lee, if you're familiar with it), and seen it on a few webpages describing it as a "Scottish fairy". Most lore on urisks...

    Smallville 12/01/04

I liked it. It wasn't great, but I didn't see much for me to hate. Some nice Clark/Chloe moments (I'm glad they're starting to replace the boring Clark/Lana moments), and I too am intrigued as to the identity of Luthor's mysterious benefactor. (I'm guessing either Ms Crosby or Ms Teague.) I'm...

    Mind Flayers and Related Beasties?

Yeah, the neh-thalggu isn't related to illithids, aside from a suggested origin for both in the Far Realm and roots in stuff like HP Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith. It actually predates the ulitharid, appearing in Castle Amber back in OD&D. And the phthisic, I think, is a creation of the...

Grr. Return of the King makes me angry.

Actually, Frodo's cousin, Lotho Sackville-Baggins, was one of Saruman's agents in the Shire -- he became Saruman's puppet "Boss" during the wizard's occupation of the Shire -- and it was Lotho who was buying up most of the Shire's pipeweed and selling it to Saruman (which contributed to the...
