D&D 5E (2014) Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Would Like To Explore Kara-Tur

Pulling in something 3rd party is all fine and good - I'm all for having multiple varied takes on the same general set of themes and cultural influences - but it still leaves the Forgotten Realms with an enormous East Asia analog that hasn't been touched in decades yet is still a canonical part...

D&D 5E (2014) Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks Would Like To Explore Kara-Tur

Because the original version of Kara-Tur was flawed, culturally insensitive in a lot of ways, and explicitly an incongruous low-magic subsetting within the VERY high magic Forgotten Realms, yet hasn't been updated in three (or is it four?) editions despite still being actively acknowledged as a...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

Because as shocking as this may be to hear, I care about more than just the mechanics. I care about how those mechanics are derived and I care about the story that process tells. The story that "pick-a-parent" tells is: "Oh, you want to play a Khoravar? Well, that's basically just an elf...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

Because the implications of "pick-a-parent", as I see it, have the (almost certainly unintended) effect of promoting a view of mixed ancestry characters that diminishes and marginalizes them, and that is not the message I think the core game system should be sending, especially with the...

D&D 5E (2024) Greyhawk Confirmed. Tell Me Why.

    Don't think we can't work with it. :p https://keith-baker.com/dm-eberron-spelljammer/

Wizards Goes Big with Vecna: Eve of Ruin

It varies. Keith Baker has floated a number of different options, from only being affected by the moon associated with Lamannia (the plane of "the wilds") or the particular moon that was full when they first became infected with lycanthropy, to suddenly being affected by every full moon (and...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

Ah yes, the incredible mechanical advantage of giving up most of a human or elf's species traits for CHECKS NOTES darkvision, fey ancestry, and a floating skill proficiency. Truly overpowered. Power gamers are going to power game - you can't stop them. And system mastery is not mutually...

D&D General D&D Beyond change - can't see list of books you've bought

You can only cram so much into that drop-down tab... I'd have to double check, but I'm willing to bet quite a bit that it doesn't actually show every individual book they have on Beyond.

Wizards Goes Big with Vecna: Eve of Ruin

Eberron's 13 12 moons are almost too much - probably why Keith Baker recommends linking lycanthropy's full moon trigger to only one of them unless the Wild Heart's influence is on the rise.

D&D General D&D Beyond change - can't see list of books you've bought

For what it's worth: Not sure when it went into effect, but the sources page now has a visible "In Library" tag on everything you own. Or most, at least - the Rrakkma adventure doesn't seem to have it, even though I own it, but I'm not sure that's purchasable on Beyond anymore for whatever...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

I must have missed the memo where they said Eberron was no longer being supported. Is it in the chapter of the new Vecna book where the PCs visit the Mournland? Or perhaps the upcoming book on the worlds of D&D with some 30 pages dedicated to covering the setting?

WotC Apparently an FR fan that also happens to be an investor asked CEO Cox a gew questions.

Might be my freshly released copy of Pathfinder 2e's Tian Xia World Guide talking, but honestly, I'd be all for an update to Kara-Tur. It'd be a lot of work, to be sure, but I think it's long overdue.

D&D 5E (2024) What do people think of the new dragon designs?

Love the look, with the exception of the wings. They either need to be big enough to look like they could actually function as wings - within a reasonable allowance for suspension of disbelief, of course - or they should not be there at all, in my opinion.

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

Sure. Put a species trait "mix-and-match" system with "half-elf"/Khoravar and "half-orc"/Jhor'guntaal as examples in the '24 DMG the same way the '14 DMG had a section for custom race creation with aasimar and eladrin as examples, and that's all I need. I've said as much before. I'd just like...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

I'm perfectly happy updating from a '14 "half-elf" to a '24 "half-elf" (whatever name it ends up using) - I've been through "edition changes" before, I can handle the mechanics being revised. I just want there to be something to update it to that isn't the '24 human or '24 elf, and at present...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

Sorry, we're in a dead magic zone, so my character can no longer communicate with the rest of the party - I was using my innate elf cantrip to speak and understand Common. If they made the effort, they could give it enough information. Instead, Khoravar players are being told to be happy their...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

You're right - absolutely no reason a traditionally forest-dwelling civilization might have for needing to see in the dark... Sarcasm aside, drow (darkvision), sea elves (water breathing), and avariel (wings) should not lose their defining characteristics due to an antagonistic abjurer or a...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

No, they really don't. A people noted for being able to innately see in the dark or breath underwater should not have that ability stripped from them simply because they wandered into an antimagic field or got hit by a cast of dispel magic.

Which currently do not exist and are purely speculative at this time. Also doesn't do anything to alleviate the issue of a "feat tax" for mixed characters of non-human ancestry. Completely disagree on the whole "just turn all your traits into innate cantrips" thing, but we've been down that...

D&D General What it means for a race to end up in the PHB, its has huge significance

It is, admittedly, less of a glaring issue with "half-orcs" in Eberron, as they don't have the same kind of unified identity that Khoravar do and are far more interwoven into a mixed society of humans, orcs, and Jhor'guntaal, but the underlying point remains the same. Without the option of...
