    Words are hard!

for me Scythe. I always pronounce it "Sith" instead of sithe (like writhe). Also, when I was a kid, I already knew the word rondevoo (misspelt on purpose)...a meeting. But in fourth grade vocabulary I had to learn this word...which also meant a meeting: ren-dez-vous. It took me several...

    If classes were a color.

I'm not feeling blue for fighters. If anything, I tend to associate blue with wizards (because of mana potions in some games being blue, as well as mana bars). I actually would do silver for fighters, but I'm not sure that'd work with your format. Some other metallic? Cleric, I'd associate...

Has anyone played "The Shab-al-Hiri Roach" RPG?

Haven't played it, but I own it and have read it. It certainly seems like a fun one shot. I'd categorize it as humor horror like Evil Dead 2 (not Evil dead 1 which was straight horror, or Army of Darkness which was adventure humor). There's some fun sillyness undercut by mild chulhu flavored...

Review of Diablo 3 by Blizzard Entertainment

First of all, pretty spot on review. I didn't have much to say, until I began playing with my son in a group. Then I realized that this quote missed something: When I solo play, I use basically 2 different "specs" for solo quest grinding and for boss fights. Playing with my son (who is an...

    Dragonboobery - a character concept.

After reading about the dragonborn trademark issue, I got to thinking about dragonboobs again...and stumbled on a character concept. We know dragons lay eggs, and I think dragonborn do as well. So I'm thinking about male eastern mythology dragonborn with the wispy moustache like gold...

Beyond the encounter: rules for pacing and downtime.

Hmm. I wonder if allowing people normal rests, but changing what is restored from rests, might change the balance a bit? E.G. A certain total number of spell levels can be be restored per daily rest. Maybe level +spellcasting modifier? So, if I'm a lvl 10 wizard with an 18 int, then I'd...

Beyond the encounter: rules for pacing and downtime.

Separately, and not to derail the thread, but does anyone know how to do a "@" mention for usernames with spaces? I can't figure it out. :p

Beyond the encounter: rules for pacing and downtime.

Many of the concerns of balance and flavor etc seem to be on the encounter level. It's my contention that this is a somewhat boring level on which to focus in terms of storytelling. The encounter level is a fragment of the game, and I'd like to see more of a focus on the whole of an experience...

You ever seen a Wizard Dominat @ low LvL?

I've never ever seen a low level wizard dominate an adventure at low levels. I've seen them dominate some encounters (e.g. sleep spell) but NEVER were they in the top half of the party for adventure domination. MVP is usually fighter.

DMs: How Do You Clue Players In That...

For my group, it's usually environmental cues. E.G. for a Dragon...there are claw marks in stone and metal veins as if they were butter. (The important part)...even with your (+3, keen) magic longsword, it'd take you days or weeks to make even a single mark like that. or.... For NPCs...

D&D 3.x Wizard limitations in 3e? Read first post before answering please.

In a discussion on the quadratic wizard, linear fighter on the D&D next forum, a point occurred to me. I wonder if people actually are aware of (and if they use) all of the wizard limitations, specifically those on learning and scribing spells. Please check out these rules before answering...

Five Suggestions to Limit Wizard Power

That's good sense...some not all does change my perspective on using them. Well, yes and no. It is certainly a balancing factor. It does provide a type of power. Heck, that's one of the things weighed against the sorceror. However, I don't think that flexibility itself is the quadratic...

Five Suggestions to Limit Wizard Power

I wanted to post a bit more regarding the "unlimited spell knowledge" point, because it's one that comes up so often, and appears to me, to be so erroneous. I DO think this is a huge issue for Clerics and Druids in 3.5 and I usually, when DMing, houserule how many source books one can draw...

Five Suggestions to Limit Wizard Power

I'm for limiting them, sure. I think most of your limitations are a bit unnecessary. I fail to understand how flexibility = quadratic wizard. Broken spells? Yes. Not enough options for other classes? Well, certainly a problem, but not the cause of the quadratic wizard. This is more of a...

    RPGs and mental health issues

Some statistics about mental health problems. Some statistics about mental health problems. People do not know how wide-spread mental health problems are. They carry a stigma, and people generally don't share their depression/substance abuse history/personality disorder diagnosis with...

    D&D 4E The Indispensable 4e

I'm not a huge 4e enthusiast, but I would love, LOVE for them to incorporate minions in some way, shape or form into 5e. Ideally, I'd like them to have slightly scaled hp (e.g. 1 hp per level or somesuch) or to use the old (2e?) heroic fray rules. Basically, I don't want commoners or henchmen...

    Easy Paladin Poll

I liked these two comments and they address how I feel about holy knights. I couldn't answer the poll as none of the answers quite fit my answer. I think a creed is much more valuable than an alignment. Beyond that, I wonder if the creed is one of a god or one of a sect. Are there paladins...
