Jeff Grubb on WotC and layoffs

I agree that Paizo is the darling of the moment, and inevitably they'll be forced to take some actions that are less than ideal for some customers (perhaps even to please other customers). HOWEVER, one thing about corporate planning: Paizo is much better than WotC. I don't know if you mean...

Fortress America: When Gaming and Politics Collide

This. America is not allowed to attack, only defend. That's the tale we've been told by the politicians in regard to Iraq and Afghanistan. We're only defending/responding to attacks that have already been launched against us. (See Bush Doctrine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) Now, I...

Daemons, Yugoloths, and other NE things: Tell me about them in your games

Cunning. Above all else, the Yugoloths are pragmatic and cunning, and they understand "types/constraints" of evil as well as the vulnerabilities of good. Fiends are among my favorite (top 3) monsters, and Yugoloths are my favorite fiends. I think of Yugoloths at low levels as "mobsters"...

Making something positive out of something negative.

For me, I'm a fan of how Paizo works with their employees as well as customers (and appears to value them). I'm buying two beginners boxes from Paizo and donating them to the local library. Maybe it'll get some kids playing. :) EDIT: While not a company, I'm also going to find...

Making something positive out of something negative.

The (continual as well as present) layoffs at WotC sadden me. But, as OpsKT points out in the other thread, boycotting WotC would only lead to more layoffs (and as others have pointed out, liklely no impact on upper management, who appear responsible for the layoffs). Beyond that, I'm not even...

    WotC's Annual Xmas Layoffs

Sorry to see both layoffs. Can anyone explain what the advantage is to the company to lay people off riiiiiight before the end of the company's fisal year? I mean, as much as I dislike what happens on an emotional level with layoffs, if the positions need to be eliminated, why isn't that...

Pathfinder 1E Amethyst Renaissance (Pathfinder edition) Progress

I (sadly) only found out about Amethyst for 3e once the d20 license expired and it was no longer available. Is this a pathfinder version of that same thing, or something else? Either way, good luck, and I'll be looking into it.

Do you track the date? The phases of the moon? The weather? Holidays?

Do you track the date? The phases of the moon? The weather? Holidays? If you do, what tools do you use? Almanac? Historical records? A simple calendar? Something else?

    Mongoose's "State of the Mongoose"

If I were WotC: I'd release 5e in 2013. There is a fantastic opportunity for the anniversary in 2014 to create a lot of buzz separate to a new edition (which itself people will check out on its own merits). Then, I'd have a slate of anniversary products, ideally across editions. For...

    Getting away from miniatures.

I've found that minis enhance understanding at the expense of visualization. We played 2e and early 3e without minis. It was a ton of fun, and my imagination filled in lots of great gaps (which was excellent in the same way reading a book can be better than a movie or a horror movie is...

    Your favourite botches

It was closer to this: Nothing to Lose - Scatman - YouTube In that movie, Tim Robbins (Nick Beam) then goes into that gas station at the end, shoes still smoking, and the proprietor says to him: "You must be really fast." I never got that response in game, though.

    Your favourite botches

In AD&D I had a caster with the specialty spell of "chromatic orb" which, regrettably, has a "to hit" roll. I rolled so many 1's with that spell (especially early on), dropping it on my own feet, that I began choosing fire for the spell and keeping protection from fire on myself at all times...

    Reviews you can trust?

Quite possible on the rose tinted nostalgia. Maybe I should have said there were some better reviewers...as in there were plenty of bad reviewers, but there were some (Psion? I think he was pretty good IIRC) that were great. Or perhaps that's rosey nostalgia as well...I am going from memory.

    Reviews you can trust?

Interesting responses, all. I'll agree with others that reviews seemed of higher quality 5-10 years ago. I wonder if that was because the market was "bigger" or less fragmented? I'm thinking specifically of the d20 glut (and perhaps the "warning away" as much as the "enthusiastic sharing")...

    Reviews you can trust?

I've begun to see a pattern of 5/5 star reviews with almost no counterbalance of 1/5 or even 3/5 in most places I look (including here). While I'd hope to see a bell curve of scores on the one to five range, it seems most products get a 4, with the remainder getting 5s or 3s, and very few...

    DnD system grit

Honestly I don't think 4e lends itself to gritty well at all. It is meant to be a high heroism, flashy system. 3e/pathfinder is a tiny bit better, but still quite bad at it, particularly at higher levels. If I were you I'd go with a different D&D. There are several options: OSRIC Castles...

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Online MMORPG Announced

After reading the paizo announcement, I read the Eve Online Faq (being unfamiliar with Eve)... ...annnd it looks remarkably similar to the paizo plans for the structure of the game. I supect that Dancy pitched the project as using most of Eve's model, but set in golarion and as a...
