Giving players narrative control: good bad or indifferent?

I think I may have the answer, and it's fairly simple (not short to explain, but simple). I don't usually say or think that, but in this case I think I might. I've only read up until page 11, btw, so this might have been addressed somewhere already...but I'm pulling from a quote on either...

Dungeons & Discourse: Atheism (and related)

Well, in 10,000 BC (the movie, and spoiler alert): There is a person claiming to be a god who no one will stand up against except, of course, the fated hero. Watching the movie the first time, a lot of it seems to be simply an action movie. Watching it a second time (or more carefully than I...

The Mysterious Mage vs. Pew Pew

I think that classes can be the "same" in one way but different in another. I don't see a reason why we couldn't have fighters with smaller attacks and a few "boffo" ones, or mages who had more stable, reliable magic. The fluff has to match, though, for me. It should be immediately obvious why...

Dungeons & Discourse: Atheism (and related)

I hope this isn't stepping too close to real world religion, but I'll use a very gentle example. What about "partial atheism" or "selective atheism"? I don't know if this is the correct term (especially since I just made it up), but... In the real world, esp in the U.S.A., we give some...

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

Well, I don't know about the playstyle of the DM aiding us, as it was a module rather than a homebrew campaign. We played Return to the temple of Elemental Evil straight (DM didn't downscale or upscale monsters/traps/etc). That's why it was two players each playing 2 pcs (to make a party of 4...

EPIC RAP BATTLES: Gandalf vs. Dumbledore

Not sure if this has ever been linked before, but maybe it'll provide the answer to http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/313751-mysterious-mage-vs-pew-pew.html Gandalf vs Dumbledore. Epic Rap Battles of History #11 - YouTube

I don't know what just happend, but it seems that Ayn Rand corrupted my player!

The players are not customers. As Umbran said, customers don't participate in shaping the product (with some exceptions). How about this analogy: The DM is a host, throwing a party. The players are guests. It is up to all to ensure that a good time is had, though the work, responsibility...

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

Well, since we're discussing Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil.... My "group" ran it with 4 pcs (my "group" was myself, another player -each of us running two guys-, and a DM). There were: A dexterity based fighter (swashbuckler?). A rogue (maybe shadowdancer?). A barbarian. A mystic...

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

Thanks for the response @pemerton ! I figured it was somewhat like that, and your gaming is pretty foreign, but intriguing to me (in a good way). @rogueagent I can't speak for Pemerton (especially given how foreign his style is to my own), but maybe I can explain it as I've come to...

I don't get the dislike of healing surges

This is a theory, and not meant to be offensive to anyone mentioned. I suspect that @Hussar and @pemerton (both of whom ardently enjoy 4e) have drastically different playstyles; perhaps to the point of being almost totally opposite. I suspect that my own, @Dannyalcatraz @BryonD @TheAuldGrump...

If WotC Released D&D 3.75 Tomorrow....

I'd buy it, read it over, and take it on a test drive. I actually thought I was fully converted to pathfinder, but I'm actually on the cusp of restarting my Midnight Campaign in it's glorious 3e variant rules. I think it might not fragment the base as much as people might think. If anything...

    New feat category: roleplaying feats?

Traditionally, at least in my games, people tend not to take feats that are "roleplaying only". Take, from 3e, the feat spell thematics. It make the wizards spells look "cooler" basically...and that's about it. The problem being, of course, few players want to take such a feat at the expense...

    Is Expanding Feats the Answer?

I don't see how it would work. I'm not inherently against the idea, but here's my concern(s): In 3e, a problem was the wide range of saving throw differences at high levels. E.G. Rogues were GONNA make a reflex save, and almost certainly fail a fort or will save. Now, I'm not one for...

    Best recent campaign setting?

Well, Midgard by Open Design is new (sorta). Oathbound is still/newly again in press. Isn't Zeitgeist part setting as well? The Great City by 0one games is, I think, new-er.

With the data presented, I'll give my thoughts: This data again seems to agree with the latest ICv2 data. http://www.enworld.org/forum/news/313557-icv2s-top-5-rpgs-summer-2011-pathfinder-again.html That's true both in terms of rankings, and in terms of "games had hot summer" here: ICv2 -...

Understanding the Edition Wars (and other heated arguments)

As someone into psychology, I found this article interesting: 5 Logical Fallacies That Make You Wrong More Than You Think | Cracked.com It's not about D&D or roleplaying, so apologies and forewarning regarding that. However, it's pretty funny (being from Cracked) and it points to some...

Ever had a demon/devil/god show up by its name being spoken?

I didn't, but I did use the rule. I had a cornugon introduce himself as Baalzephon, which was a lie... Baalzephon is actually a pit fiend in the dark eight. That 5% chance never came up, though (but the 10 words after his name did, with info provided to lesser devils).
