The need for monsters as beings rather than statblocks.

Well, Bob, you have a point. I just edited the two points that you made out of the OP. Since you were so turned off by those, you probably missed my multiple "mea culpas" in the body of this thread (if you only read the OP). ANYWHOO.... mea culpa (yet again) for overreaction as to the...

The need for monsters as beings rather than statblocks.

I agreed with the rest of your post, so didn't quote it. I disagree with this. I was a biology minor in college just because I found it so interesting. I don't think that I have a unique interest in the "neat things about animals" so long as we focus on mainly the neat parts rather than a full...

The need for monsters as beings rather than statblocks.

I've responded to the second paragraph already (in agreement, sorry can't xp you again...too recent). But to address the first paragraph: I agree. Sometimes it's just "here's a random encounter". I'm TOTALLY fine (and frequently do) use monsters in that way. Not every monster needs to be used...

The need for monsters as beings rather than statblocks.

I'm in agreement with all three posters above me. It's entirely possible that the article was one where he was SOLELY talking about the mechanical conversion, and not writing up a full statblock. That hadn't occurred to me at first. If that's the case, then I certainly wish to reign in my...

The need for monsters as beings rather than statblocks.

Forked from: http://www.enworld.org/forum/news/324875-monster-design-d-d-next.html I was REALLY optimistic earlier on for D&DN (and when Monte was on board) with their "flavor first" philosophy. Now I read this: That's what makes a hook horror what it is? Clicking, hooks, climbing, and...

    Monster Design in D&D Next

Actually, I'm going to fork this. Seems you guys are mostly talking about the the crunch of the article, the stat blocks, which is cool. http://www.enworld.org/forum/new-horizons-upcoming-edition-d-d/324957-need-monsters-beings-rather-than-statblocks.html#post5943006

Asmodeus and the rule of three [PLANESCAPE]

That's a FANTASTIC point. This would be my own invention...but perhaps the Oinoloth/Baernoloths? That would make him directly through indirectly responsible for most of the evil in the multiverse (if he created the Baernoloths and they, in turn, created the Yugoloths, who created the -was it...

Pathfinder 1E Advice for way of the wicked?

We've been gearing up for a while, and will be playing our first session in 1 week (June 18). Two things I'd like to know about, that I have either missed or not noticed: 1. Is there a clear penalty spelled out in the contract if it's broken? 2. I plan on giving my (small group of 4)...

How to deal with a problem player

There's also the "I'm a new DM, and I know I'm going to not be great at first, but could you please all work with me to help everything go smoothly? An expert DM might be able to juggle more information/challenges/player versus player dynamics...but I'm not that expert, yet. So, if we could all...

Asmodeus and the rule of three [PLANESCAPE]

I like the idea of Sigil as the entity rather than the lady. Maybe the lady is its avatar, or perhaps something more akin to an organ or blood cell.

Asmodeus and the rule of three [PLANESCAPE]

I'm running Way of the Wicked by Fire Mountain Games, in which players play villians, beginning as servants of a cleric of Asmodeus (and likely worshiping the dark lord of lies themselves). So I've been reading up on him. There are several origin stories, but the coolest, IMO, and the oldest...

GM Confessional: I fudged like a Banshee (just not on the dice rolls)

While fudging isn't a dirty word, winging =/= fudging. In my understanding of the terms, winging is tossing together some rudimentary numbers so that you don't have to prep (or because the players went off course and you have to make stuff up on the fly). Fudging, in its broadest term, is...

    D&D Lair Assault: Spiderkiller

Well then, that's good news! I'm glad to hear the fortune cards are "fun addons" rather than "instawin buttons"! Also, I was being sincere with the first part of my prior post. It does sound like a pretty exciting scenario.

    D&D Lair Assault: Spiderkiller

It sounds like a cool combat event with a lot of exciting components. However, this: and this: Seem at odds with this: Master tacticians will have an edge...and/or people who spend a crapload of money on fortune cards. Eh. Forgive me. It is this sort of situation that gives me...

Black Box GMing - Would you play with it?

My wife wanted to play, but didn't want to learn all the rules, so I DMed her that way. I made her a gestalt (3e) character, so she'd have many more options as to what she could do, and that seemed to help. I wouldn't do it with a large group, but it was fun when we tried it.

Is "you can, but at a penatly" the same as "you can't?"

If I could XP this, I would. It just about perfectly answers the OP's question, and succinctly at that.

    Welcome to our new moderators!

Congrats to all. I'll work on three "questionable threads"...one for each'a'ya. 1. Grandma inappropriate: Can grandma's set VCRs? What about DVD players? 2. Political: Should Moderators be allowed to vote in polls? 3. Offensive: Should Kamikaze Midget be allowed to use words that...

Obective look at WotC's history with D&D

I'd bet that the Pathfinder core book has pulled in that much (so long as you write off the loss of printing, paying for art, distribution, time paid to authors during development, etc.) :p It's a nasty picture you paint, Hussar, with people ignoring some facts and focusing on others to suit...

Review of Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG by Goodman Games

I'm not an oldschool gamer, and certainly not a hardcore oldschool gamer (like some in this thread may or may not be)... ...but I find the game interesting and a great juxtaposition to the extremes of 3.x, Pathfinder, and 4e...and will be buying it to play, understand and also... ...to...
