    D&D 4th Edition Next Year?

Well, I don't know how I stack against the fairly big industry type, but I'll go on record as saying that I don't think there's any way possible that there will be a new edition of the game suddenly showing up any time next year. All you have to do is look at their product schedule to see that...

    WotC and print runs

Sounds like a believable number, actually. Except for the really most popular products, in the 90s most print runs were probably in that range. It's interesting that there was probably more dichotomy during 2E for what a popular D&D product sold and a not-so-popular one than today. The sales of...

    WotC and print runs

Unless things have changed significantly, most of WotC's books don't have subsequent print runs. "Evergreen" books like the PH, DMG, MM and a few of the most popular books (that have been around a while) are the exception. Now, that's doesn't mean that the books don't sell well. It just means...

Why I only buy open content

I agree with eveything Tensen said. If we're going to talk about ethics of creativity, and ethics of OGC declaration, why not the ethics of OGC use? If someone who makes more of his content open than is required is morally superior, I'll argue that so is someone that asks, or even informs, a...

    Flip mats versus Tact Tiles

I'll not stop using my Tact-Tiles at home, but the Flip-Mat has become my convention pal. It's what I'll be taking with me whenever I DM somewhere other than my own game room. Both are really great.

Why I only buy open content

Sure it does. It grants everything. I imagine that's what you're saying, though--it's an all or nothing (at least as far as non-OGC goes) kind of thing. You didn't want the whole thing, just one. All that said (and I'm sorry if this is harsh), making other publishers happy ultimately isn't...

Why I only buy open content

The entirety of AU/AE is available for use via a free license as mentioned on page 430 of AE or 254 of AU, but yeah, you have to contact us to get it. Really, though, we're not so scary.

RPG Authors: How Do You Do It?

On a day without a lot of distractions, I usually shoot for 4,000 good words/day. I've done more--a lot more, in fact--but it's difficult to keep up the pace. It's also harder to make them good words at a faster pace than that. In fact, I'd like to slow down my output to an average of about...

    Record Your Ptolus Pre-Orders Here!

Yeah, we're working to make this happen, but at this point I'm not going to promise anything. It's a big logistical endeavor.

    GC 2006 - Ptolus Hardback $120!?!

To answer a few more questions: Yes, it's d20. Yes, the NPCs use alignment (the text in those sample pages is virtually unedited, it's really there to give you an idea of layout/organization and little more). It's pretty standard d20. I'm looking into Banewarrens right now, determining...

    GC 2006 - Ptolus Hardback $120!?!

Wow! We weren't expecting all this discussion before we even put the website (www.ptolus.com) together. However, it's up now. There, you'll find lots more details about the book and about preordering (and some of the benefits of doing so). You can also see an art preview, a sneak peek at the...

McFarlane Toys releases picts for Dragons II

These are great. I love the Komodo one. And when those Lovecraft toys come out, I'll give a free Malhavoc pdf to the first person who emails me with a link that I can use to order them (monte at montecook dot com)--otherwise, I'll forget all about them between now and whenever.

No previews for "Year's Best D20?"

It was fun. Reading game products is something I do anyway, so that part of it was certainly no chore. Making the final decisions was tough. I had a huge spreadsheet of material and "graded" it A, B, C, etc., being really, really harsh. All the A material made it into the book, but what became...

Arthaus reverts rights to Ravenloft and Gamma World back to Wotc

Ravenloft, as a setting, was never my cup of tea (I wrote one product for it, back in 2E days), but the products were always high quality, both from TSR/WotC and from Arthaus. I didn't run a Ravenloft game, or even a horror game, but I did mine the 3E Ravenloft books for monsters and plot...

No previews for "Year's Best D20?"

That's what I thought. I tried very hard not to let it influence any decisions, but I was hoping it would be the kind of book that would offer you good stuff from the known names as well as the smaller guys. I'm happy how that turned out. Overall, though, I was expecting more submissions...

No previews for "Year's Best D20?"

Thanks for your interest! We're excited about this one, but we haven't been doing our normal previews and whatnot, because previews would give away who's material's in the book before it comes out, and we don't want to do that. Look on our site for more info about it on Monday. That's the same...

    SKR Adventure in Dungeon 126

I haven't yet read the latest, but I was really impressed with the Demogorgon adventure. Sean did a great job of organizing and presenting the information to make it really easy to use. Plus, it was just pretty darn cool.
