Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I always thought it was a bit goofy that the Dragon’s name is Borys.

OK. I guess it just felt more respectful to me compared to its predecessors. It was nice to see they filmed on location in Japan using Japanese actors. Yes, Bond "turning Japanese" was weird, but at least it was done intentionally as a disguise, unlike say when they cast white Canadian-American...

They killed him but then he became an undead lich-dragon thing (not a dracolich).

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Rajaat wasn’t a halfling himself. He was a Pyreen – a sort of angelic being, except he was an extraordinarily ugly one, so the constant disgust and prejudice the lesser races gave him drove him to bitterness and evil. He thought the halflings were the best because they were Athas’ original...

One point of difference is that the full HP series got translated into movies, which then had a spin-off prequel series and computer games and so on. The Ender's Game series got one movie, which wasn't all that well-received, and its sequels are pretty much unfilmable,* so there wasn't really...

No, it's in the "many years later" epilogue of the last book / movie, when Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione are putting their children on the Hogwarts Express. Not here to argue about his antisemitism. However, I am rewatching all the old Bond movies with my teen daughters, and we watched You...

I loved this book so much as a freshman in high school that my glowing book review convinced my English teacher to put it on his required reading list for subsequent freshmen! The sequels got weirder and weirder until Card ended up plagiarising himself by retelling Ender's Game from the...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Yeah, while Shattered Lands is on Steam, I wouldn't recommend trying to play it now. I mean, this is what the game looks like: Not pretty. And that font is super-hard to read! But if they were to take the basic plot and layout and make a modern game out of it? That would be super-cool.

Absolutely. That being said, it was certainly not the only adventure that TSR put out like that. Look at the FR Time of Troubles series of adventures (Shadowdale, Tantras, Waterdeep). They're pretty much the same thing - the PCs get to help the novel characters (Midnight, Kelemvor, Cyric, etc)...

Indeed. Freedom is essentially "go on minor side quests to aid the rebellion while the novel heroes do all the hard work (like fighting the sorcerer-king) and get all the glory." IIRC the adventure even includes a bit where the PCs get to watch the novel heroes do their thing in the arena, but...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Doomspace. It was not made clear that it was in the far, far future. It was rather a big FU to DS fans. Athas’ lost gods found a way to break through the crystal sphere that had locked them out and, in a fit of pique, turned the planet’s sun into a black hole. One moon had already been sucked...

I just watched it a year or so ago with one of my daughters and I found it as boring as I did the first time. It’s just so slooooow, and I don’t feel any of the tension that others feel when watching it. I like Aliens much better, and I quite liked Romulus.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Indeed. I can’t remember if I got Dark Sun: Shattered Lands or the OG Dark Sun box set first. I have the latter still but haven’t read it properly since I first got it in the mid-90s. Back then, my only experience actually playing Dark Sun was via the Shattered Lands game, which I found so...

My extremely unpopular opinion (around here at least) is that Alien is a boring snooze fest along the same lines as other late 70s sci-fi snooze fests (e.g. Close Encounters, 2001, the first Star Trek movie).

My brain had certainly come up with a different sense of what they were than what was actually in the OG book.

That too. But it's also about power dynamics. When creators are new and don't have a lot of clout, they have to listen to the editor/publisher/producer/etc. As the creator becomes more successful, wealthy, and famous, they gain more power and can tell the editors, publishers, and studio execs to...

It's not that the editors aren't willing to provide advice. It's that the creators aren't willing to listen and are big enough that they don't have to.
