It's so easy to forget updating your chits when things get heated. There is a good reason the "Illegal Procedure" rule exists in Bloodbowl...
("Illegal Procedure": If you forget to move your turn marker, and the opponent spots it, you have to forfeit the turn...)
If I wanted a game about combat, I would play Warmachine, Confrontation, Mordheim, Necromunda, even Bloodball, where the fight is more or less fair, not heavily stacked in your favor.
Edit: Yes, I meant Bloodbowl, sorry.
4E was the system that really opened up my eyes to the smoke-and-mirrors nature of leveling up. It was just so clear and easy to see when first reading the initial rules and then playing the system.
Once really seeing it, it's hard to unsee, and it's basically ruined the "level-up moment" for...
The one thing our group has found that works wonders for "Lone Wolf" situations is some kind of "Party Telepathy", whether by spell, magic item, or hi-tech earphones.
That way the party can spread out, each PC doing "their thing" when it comes to social encounters - the bard off to the taverns...
Loved Marshmallow too. Pets get cutesy names all the time, and it is extra fun if it is som kind of ferocious animal. Just compare to the kind of ironic nicknames people tend to get, such as calling a really big guy "Tiny".
I think your example was simply too complex. In this format you want something that can be summarized in just a few sentences, so that you can pop in a quick idea. If you have something that requires you to sit back and design, then you will get a lot fewer replies.
Better to ask for simple...
One of my favorite non-combat scenarios from a past campaign I played in:
Evacuation
Running across an isolated village of disfigured, mutated people (mongrel-folk in the original) deep down underground, you have to win their confidence and emphasize with their plight enough to want to aid...
I started GM-ing as a service and on a lark. We were discussing a fun, tongue-in-cheek system ("Maid the RPG"), that I *really* wanted to try out, but at the same time I did not even want to suggest it to my regular GM, as he already had two weekly campaigns at the time. I also had figured out...
Having had the company were I work bought twice, I am not at all surprised. The first time they told us how much they valued the product line we were working on. One half year later, most of us were hired out as consultants. The second time they told us how much they valued our competency and...
My "Maid the Roleplaying Game" campaign has hit 50+ sessions, and so far it has been great fun. We've used it to visit a lot of anime genres and clichés.
When I played Shadowrun we had dice pools that renewed each session. I wondered why a certain player suddenly started asking lots of rules questions, asking for clarifications of details in the situation, discussing minutiae, raising arguments, etc, whenever her dice pools started to get low...
Heroic tier has more players; ergo, supplements at those levels will bring in more money. More buck for the bang, if you like.
With a fewer products published, the probably want each one to count.
