We used to have critical successes on skill rolls in the 3.5 game - if you first rolled a 20 and then confirmed with a second successfull skill roll, you got something extra out of it. That way one of my characters got taken for a goddess on a 20-20 diplomacy check, got involved in the religious...
That may have been their stated intent, but they've already muddled up the silos with feats paying for, well, what little non-combat options there is in the game (skills, skills specializations, languages) as well as as combat options...
The problem is that "super rolling" has no effect on the skill challenge what so ever. Skill challenges are passed by all members of the group avoiding failure rolls. If you pass with 2 or you pass with 20 does not matter in the slightest.
To quote from Mearls himself in the recent Dragon...
I had too, really, really hoped that they would add some non-combat powers so you had some interesting out-of-combat options, other than just (sigh) slugging your way through yet-another-skill-challenge. :( :(
It's not like there is a dearth of combats powers...
Sounds like what we here in Sweden would call a "Good day, axe handle" situation. It's from a tale that I think is Norwegian in origin:
There was an old man that sat at a fork in the road, carving himself a new handle to his axe, when he saw a good-looking, well-dressed woman approaching. Now...
I agree... 4E items are extraordinarily unexciting. I'm sitting with 13000 gold on my level 11 bard, and hand and arm slots empty. I've went through the books thrice, and not found anything interesting enough to buy at that level... :(
Well, you will have to start by using "Come and Get It" on them. Unless they use "No Opening", you can continue using "Armor-Piercing Thrust", until you finish off with "Sudden Surge". ;) ;)
And then they'll complain about you having to get a Short Rest before you can repeat it...
(ducks...
If you want to give coin economy and haggling a prominent part of your campaign, I can only recommend one thing:
Get hold of the Anime series "Spice and Wolf" (Spice and Wolf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), using any means at your disposal!
It is a very good take on trade-as-adventure...
Eschew Material Components was always a favorite feat with me in 3.5... usually the first one I picked, just because I did not like the image of my spell caster fiddling around with spiders and guano.
Using gold is actually better for me; then I can pretend that my bard spent her time...
You did not just plunder, you went in for deliberately terrorizing civilians and cause widespread starvation.
Chevauchée - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :
Feels like some other early flyer is left out; either edited out or not put into the game yet (held back as a future guaranteed seller?). That would mean that the Ebony fly would not stand out as much. See the Butterfly Sandals in AV, and this discussion...
Had one such instance in a game yesterday. The encounter consisted of an ogre leader and 30 or so ogre minions. With a bunch of action points, the team's three strikers made mincemeat of the leader in the first few rounds, and then the minions rushed into the Warlock's (ranger multiclass) cobra...
Cow Tipping (Epic Attack)
With a ferocious pounce you strike the horrendous bovine creature, and with a mighty shove you send it flying through heaven and hell, landing defeated at your feet. Angels sing hosianna to your praise, and an archangel gives you the high-five to celebrate your triumph...
