Utility Magic: What's your favorite and why

I very, very much agree. One character I loved very much was a wizard in the Dragonstar universe. When the fighters and rogues run around in power armor with vibroswords, laser carbines, chain guns and so on, there was not very much room for regular fireballs and lightning bolts, so I had to...

    Any supplements/charts for a Chaotic/Wild magic area?

There are scores of "random magic effects" tables out there... :) Just google it: http://www.google.se/search?q=random+magical+effects If I may come with a suggestion: don't just apply a new random effect every time a caster uses a spell - let each effect keep appearing for a little longer...

    Intimidate in combat: viable?

It's the DM's job to keep up the appropriate appeareance of a threat against the party. That means that he most probably adjusts the monsters to fit what the party can do. For example, I've had a DM that changed the 3.5 "always hit on a 20" rule into "always hit on a 19-20", just because...

    Intimidate in combat: viable?

I can very much understand that argument... :) :) I dont know if you've realized that, but Minions are always going to be immune versus this tactic, since they never can become blooded... You cannot scare away those guys, no matter how supernaturally scary you are. :)

Flying is Epic - But Ebony Fly is high heroic?

I think it referrs to the general rule that things that lasts for an encounter, that is until a short (or long) rest, generally lasts for five minutes when you are outside of a combat situation and are not counting rounds. (PH, p. 278) I'm not so sure the designer of the Ebony Fly thought about...

Thirst and Dehydration: How much water?

You don't have to be dehydrated for this. There was a case a while ago: When the Wii console was highly sought after, an US radio station had a competition with a to them very funny punnish theme - you had to stay the longest in their studio without going to the bathroom to win. When the...

Flying is Epic - But Ebony Fly is high heroic?

You may also want to compare the Pearl Sea Horse with the Waterbreathing ritual (and similar). You can also note that with Figurine mounts, you get the Mounted Combat feat for free, when comparing with regular mounts.

Does a worn Holy Symbol take up an Item Slot?

They do phrase other items similar to that. Polyglot Gem in Adventurers Vault: "If you carry more than one polyglot gem on your person, none of them function." There you have yet another phrasing of just about the same type of rule, but this one is clearer that stowing it does not work. Now...

    Are you tired of conditions?

Very emphatically agreed. My bard just got up to 10th level yesterday, and it really feels like a must to take Savior's Song (until the end of the encounter, any ally within 5 can reroll one failed save / turn). I would just loved to have had some kind of non-combat option... Also agreed. I...

The Game for Non-Gamers: (Forked from: Sexism in D&D)

It does not have to do with gender, and it does not have to do with being a gamer or non-gamer. Even as a long-time gamer combat can after many years of combat-centric campaigns turn into, as you put it, "if you take out the trash enough, you'll become better at taking out the trash."...

    Expertise justification?

Why is that absurd? If the party hits too well for fights to be fun and interesting, the DM should certainly raise the AC to make them interesting again. The same should apply in the reverse situation... if the party hit too badly for them to be interesting, the AC should be lowered in the same...

    Waking an Unconsious Ally

Why is that? If a genie grants you a wish, you do get something new, not an extra shot at a previous one...

    Waking an Unconsious Ally

The Heal skill, as per p.185 of the PH: "Grant a Saving Throw: Make a DC 15 Heal check. If you succeed, an adjacent ally can immediately make a saving throw [...]". If you "grant" a saving throw, does it mean that you get the saving throw itself (i.e. where none existed before), or just...

    Sequestering Strike Instakill?

I've done the same thing as a player with my sorceress in a 3.5 Savage Tide adventure path campaign - I've actively avoided taking SODs. A) It's more important to me that the campaign works all the way up to 20 than to "rule" in a few fights. Long time enjoyment over short time gratification...

    Sequestering Strike Instakill?

As per page 44 of the DMG, a creature is entitled to a saving throw if you use forced movement to put it into Hindering Terrain. Hindering terrain is defined on page 61 of DMG as "Hindering terrain prevents movement (or severely punishes it) or damages creatures that enter it, but allows line...

Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

I think the point here is that if a boys-only club is sexist, then a girls-only one ought to be sexist too. If marketing something to a male audience using imagery that attracts males is sexist, marketing something... well, fill in the rest.

Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

Yes. In how many cultures and subcultures isn't saying that someone is acting like the other gender one of the worst insults you can make? Especially that someone male is acting like a female. Insults and curses got to be one of the most telling and exposing ways in which a culture shows its...

    Sequestering Strike Instakill?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but having a feather fall talisman "only" keeps you from getting killed by the fall - you are still very much removed from the current fight. It may be an important distinction for PCs, but not so important for monsters that exist only for that very fight.
