D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

This is a big concern of mine now - I think WOTC was spoiled by the existence of the DDI tool and that meant there was less of a brake on the natural tendency of designers to tinker. In any other game you might have gotten a book of optional extras or some web articles about alternatives to some...

D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

I don't care about sides - I've run, played, and liked both games and lived with the errata for each. There were definitely different approaches though, and you seemed to favor one over the other. That's fine. I like a lot of Monte's stuff but that's one guy's opinion. I'm sure economics was a...

D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

Dropping back a bit: I thought they should have done this with 4E once they published the Rules Compendium. If you're going to make it a $20-$25 softcover then don;t sell me the "Rules Compendium" - sell me the "Rules Compendium 2013", then next year put out the "RC 2014" with all of the past...

D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

In this same thread you yourself acknowledged that 3E and 4E both had errata and both presented it differently and stated that you preferred 3E's format. The format is a big reason that 4E's errata takes up more pages! If 4E had been handled in the same way as 3E then the page count might have...

Pathfinder 1E Mythic Pathfinder = how to break a game

Exactly ... and it looks like things might turn out OK. Here's a thought from another mostly DM/occasional player: Don't declare it broken until you get there. I'd be disappointed if any player decided that my campaign was not viable just because they can build a character at max level that...

D&D 5E (2014) Would a repeat of the large errata from the previous edition put you off of Next?

First, I suspect Next will have less errata then 4E early on because much of 4E's was spent tweaking or correcting individual powers. With less of that kind of thing it should be easier to manage. I suspect typos just flow at a certain average rate per amount of words so those will still happen...

Should you be able to cut a beholder's eyestalks off?

"Should you"? Isn't the question "How do you" or "where do you sell them after you"? - oh, you mean while it's still alive ... Point 1: 4th edition D&D, while not everyone's favorite, has exactly this kind of thing built in to its various powers. Slows, Stuns, Prones, Forced Movement, Ongoing...

Looking for Rome vs Barbarians Setting

Weird Wars Rome is aimed at a legion-based campaign and has decent historical information but does assume Weirdness is possible. My review on the blog here: http://towerofzenopus.blogspot.com/2013/09/weird-wars-rome.html Besides this there was a small game ten years ago or so called "Fulminata"...

    FLGS in Austin, Texas

I will second that motion - it's a great store. There's a chance some kind of event will be going at any given time so if you have an interest in anything from 'clix to Magic to Pokemon to a wing game you may be able to play in one of them.

D&D 5E (2014) How can the first campaign at release be FR without a setting book?

Pathfinder launched its Adventure Paths before there was any Big Book of Golarion. I would expect that the adventures will contain some FR-specific material and that we will get a Big Book of Faerun by the 2015 Gen Con.

    Ruins of Adventure

Well if you want my notes you could just ask : ) My powers have weakened - somehow I missed this thread until now. I'll warn you, they are notes, not a complete written-as-prose modern adventure, but I do have lists for the encounters as I saw them. It's not a note-for-not transcription of...

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

You're entirely right, but I wonder if that has changed now. Paizo has shown that they can run a healthy line based mainly on providing adventures, with the rules as a supplement to those. The companies run on a different scale, but the financials seem to be working better than 4E's were a few...

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

It was, but it covered everything you needed for a set range of levels in each box - races/classes, monsters, magic items, DM advice, etc. Call it a "layered" approach where each release stacked on to the previous vs. AD&D's model (and the main one ever since then) of a "silo-ed" approach of...

D&D 5E (2014) Initial D&D Next Releases Showing Up on Barnes & Noble Website

I think $50 sounds about right - Pathfinder core book came out in 2009 for $50. Supporting books list at $40. Against the Slavelords hardcover last year from WOTC was $50 (limited print run but black and white interior as well). Marvel Heroic Civil War hardcover was $50 in 2012. Lots of RPG...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

This is my problem as well and I've phrased it very similarly. How much retro do I need when I have that stuff from the first go-round? I was hoping for more, at least mechanically. I've talked about this too. It's all very comfortable for those of us who grew up on the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Since no one else said, I'll say it - Pathfinder Beginner Box. It's very good and I did exactly that with a similarly aged group. I was mostly running 4E at the time for the grown-ups, so it was not an "I like Pathfinder" thing. It's just good.

    D&D 5E (2014) I just don't buy the reasoning behind "damage on a miss".

I think the OP sums it up pretty well. People generally are willing to accept any kind of mechanical shenanigans when it comes to spells because "it's magic". Many of those same people though have very hard limits on what a "normal human" can do because they are normal humans and assume that...

DDI Updates end in March - WotC Trevor Kidd

I'm guessing if it sticks around it will be a "free extra" included with paying for a DDI subscription to Next. If there is one. Monthly subscribers are a nice source of income but I wonder if it will fly nowadays with so many free tools for other RPG's. Hopefully they don't just kill it off...

Pathfinder 1E Does pathfinder strike anyone as too gamey?

Mythic is the new "Epic without being Level 20" book, not a PH2. Now the forthcoming "Advanced Class Guide" ... Oh come on now - 4th Edition was the most party/group focused RPG I've seen as far as mechanics and approach and going back to Basic/AD&D we always used individual initiative. Let's...

Pathfinder 1E Is Pathfinder going to slow down?

That's exactly it - I've been running 4E for the last 3 years (and still am) paying only minimal attention to Pathfinder. Now that I'm starting up a new PF campaign with the new AP I'm picking up the material relevant to that AP. That plus the World Guide gives me everything I need and then...
