New WotC Article - Deadly Dice

For my own personal preference, there needs to be a serious risk. At low levels, if I die, I roll up a new character because I'm not going to afford the sums to get raised. At medium levels, if I die, I get raised, but it will be costly to my character both mechanically and economically. My...

    Heroes, Zeroes, and Kings

I think some players will like the superheroic aspect of epic play, but others idea of fantasy will be tough with sword and spell, but orcs are still a threat. I think the game should cater to both ends of the spectrum and everything in between.

Hillside Games vs. The Wyvern's Tale: An Update

It's clearly a tactic that's backfired on Hillside Games, particularly since it got aired public. Well, glad things worked out for Wyvern's Tale.

1 player and 1 GM. Suggestions?

Not my cup of tea when it's just you and 1 player, but I'd run the story as is with pretty much very low-powered encounters. Personally, I'd look to add players. I just won't run a campaign with less than 3 players, it's not worth the time when I can get a D&Dish boardgame and play that.

How Wizards of the Coast Could Slay in Profit

You have to be careful about that. Even though they own the brand, it's no longer their core competency, because they no longer support that particular product line (i.e. old editions). They would need to "tool up" in order to get back into making games to support the old editions. I'm not...

How Wizards of the Coast Could Slay in Profit

I agree. If 80% of your market moved on, 10% dropped out, and 10% of your market stayed in x edition, that's only 10%. Back in 1e and 2e's days, they had millions of active players because that's what there was to play. Now I doubt that there's even 1% of that who is adamantly strictly 1e (not a...

    What's the Problem with Save-or-Die?

SoD immunity helps too. Always good to get in a good buff to protect you against it.

    What's the Problem with Save-or-Die?

I'm a fan of SoD. However, I think there should be very few mechanics to support them, be used at high levels. Only a few monsters should have "death attacks", there should be a few spells that will have SoD and those are usually at 8th or 9th level spells, a handful of inescapable traps, and...

Victories and No Defeats in D&D

So true. Many groups will fight to the last man standing rather than admit defeat.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Biggest Issue in 5E

There's a caveat for that--if combat is fast, then it could be anticlimatic and ultimately boring. Imagine facing off the BBEG and bam, one round or two rounds later, he's dead. That's it? The other thing is that fast combat, depending upon design mechanics, can come down to "He who wins...

    How much should HP scale?

I'm flexible when it comes to hp. If a 1st level fighter gets 10 hp flat or 50 hp + Con + Con modifier + class bonus, that's okay with me too. As for scaling, it really depends. If combats are to be really quick, then there should be low-hp thresholds versus high-damage output and if combats...

DMing Puzzles: Not Too Easy, Not Too Hard, What's Just Right?

My take is that if I'm going to invent a puzzle for my players to solve, then I'm going to create one at their ability to solve. My players are not puzzle-solvers. They don't like riddles and puzzles so when I throw one at them, then it's got to be a simple one or nothing at all. Granted it's...

Are you happy with your current game/edition?

I'm currently happy with Pathfinder; however, I'm very curious and interested in 5e's development. Also, I would like WotC to pull off a win with this and achieve their design goals, because if they do, then it's compatibility with PF which I can see myself collecting in the future. At the very...

    D&D 5E (2014) If Next were a Mechanics Orphanage

Cool thread! Cavaliers start out with negative levels and gain d12 hit dice at 1st level. Every class can have a kit that goes with it. Weapons vs. armor table. Bard requires you to take fighter and rogue levels first. Segments. Dual-classing for humans, multiclassing for demi-humans. Demi-humans.
