    Is random good?

I like having a lot of random elements in my game, particularly for encounters. I have planned encounters and I have random encounters. When the PC's get done slaughtering the baddies, I'll include a table for some random treasure on top of the planned stuff. It allows me to use my d30's and...

The Crapification of Organized Play - Unavoidable?

The difference I took from "judge" and DM is that Rule 0 is seriously curtailed. I remember from judging LG that I cannot make rule calls on the fly just to suit my own tastes or deal with someone who is being a pain in butt. Someone could challenge me on that and get me over-ruled by the Triad...

    Power vs. Options

Now that's definitely a flatter scale you got there Iron! Looks like you went for a +1/3 levels.

    Measurements for ranges and grids

    Are your weights in shekels?

    Measurements for ranges and grids

And weights should be in stones. ;)

    "Modular" does not mean "Generic"

All this talk about GURPS makes me want to point-buy a character up and get playing.

    DND Gurps....

I thought WotC was copying World of Synnibarr. :p I do like the modularity and toolkit nature of GURPS and Herosystem. I'm a big fan. Not sure if WotC is going to go this route though.

    Retraining?

I never was a fan of retraining, but that's me.

    Morale

I just use common sense. I set the hp level when the NPCs and monsters break off combat and begin to run away. Only fanatical cultists, devoted defenders to unholy sites, or races of creatures where failure is rewarded with a painful torturous death (or terrible to live the encounter in failure)...

Fabletop - Roleplaying on the Web (Beta)

That's impressive for a solo effort. How many hours would you say you put into building what you have so far in terms of coding and programming?

Buy High, Sell Low is a Dumb Economic Model

I had a DM who crafted trade rules before 3.5 came out with their version because our players wanted to engage in a trade business hauling goods from one place to another in between adventures. The DM didn't want to, but it was what we wanted so he did it. Really fun.

    Loonook. Brilliant and well-thought out.

    Agreed!

    Power vs. Options

I'm for a flatter power curve so long as the d20 roll remains relevant at the highest levels. If D&DN goes to 36th level (yay!), then I could see a BAB only going up +1/3 levels or +1/4 levels for fighter types. If D&DN only caps at 15th level (), then +1/1 level or +1/2 levels...

    Castles & Crusades Houserules

Pheonix, A question I have is what's your goal with the house rules? For #1, I'm unclear of whether it's a bookkeeping issue or just a matter to add some "spice" in the sauce. #2 I understand, but Dusty's right about that. The power disparity is addressed by having differing XP progression. And...

    Power vs. Options

Think of the converse too. As a DM, would you be happy that the 1st level party can challenge your "7th level" orc (I guess this could be some orc barbarian chieftain)? I think picking the power curve is going to be a challenge for the designers--finding that spot where most of the playtesters...

Do You Want A D&D That Is "Faster, Better, Smarter"?

For me, I agree with you in that it needs to clean up its idiosyncracies, but it does need to offer a new experience too in which adopting to 5e is a reasonable choice. For example, if I pick up 5e and it's core rules plus a couple of module rulesets and it plays like 3.5, then why would I...

    Getting rid of "Taking 10"

I don't necessarily know all the skill check modifiers that my players have for their characters so if they say, "I take 10" and it beats the DC, that's fine with me. I could auto success skill checks in which I think that if they took their time to do, then it would be fine too. Taking 10...

    Castles & Crusades Houserules

    1. If you don't mind your wizard to be able to hit as effectively with his quarter staff that a fighter can with a longsword, this is okay. Some people would object to the approach. I wouldn't toss out BtH myself. 2. No issue there. 3. No issue there too. 4. That just makes the tough stuff...
