Tell Me About Your Experiences with Theater of the Mind 5E

I find that 5e is much better for TotM than other editions, but still only with combats that don't have too many enemies to fight. When you have lots of enemies placement and position becomes more important. I'm back to D&D after running a Cypher System campaign (Numenera) which was purely TotM...

This is the playable race I've been waiting for.

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-Dungeon Crawl Published Campaign Recommendations

I'm just running Tomb of Annihilation at the moment and for the most part it is wilderness adventure. There is a huge dungeon at the end, but there is enough material in there that you could cut that out and design your own campaign using the materials that are there. I'm finding it great, it...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone still do mapping?

We use roll20 online or in person with dynamic lighting. One interesting thing I have found is that with dynamic lighting, if someone isn't keeping a rough map in a biggish dungeon it is possible for them to get lost. I had one party fleeing for their lives, thought they were going back the way...

What to do and where to start after a TOTAL PARTY KILL?

I'm starting ToA on Thursday and I am preparing for the possibility of a TPK. I will ask the PCs to report in everytime they go into town to update Syndra's map and to report on what they have found. That will mean that if a new party starts, they will get the information up to the last town...

D&D 5E (2014) Need Help Figuring Out Problems With Feywild's Time Warp For Homebrew...

Or that the timewarp ratio changes based on narrative need. The first time one day=1 week, the second time 1 day equals a year, the third time one day equals 2 days. There is no rhyme nor reason to it. How can it possibly make sense? It can't and that's OK.

D&D 5E (2014) Using 5e for Eberron? Pitfalls, advice and cheers wanted.

I ran the 5e adventure path 'Princes of the Apocalypse' but reflavoured it and set it around the city of Xandrar in Breeland. It was only semi-Eberron in flavour, but worked well. I added Eberron flavour where i could. Here is the adventure log if that helps...

    Dungeon Tiles Reincarnated

Hopefully they make them available via Roll20. I would buy that version.

D&D 5E (2014) How common is resurrection in your game?

No resurrection ever in my game. I'd probably allow it if they were near a major city, but it would come with obligations. However whenever anyone dies in my game the rest of the party are always too busy fleeing for their lives to be able to collect the corpse.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

Boooo. That Gnome Paladin sounds awesome. Annoying for everyone else at the table, but awesome for the player who designed him. Don't you badwrongfun Satyrn and his eccentricities.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

I've told my players that in the next game it will be 4d6 drop lowest, but in order. Once you have your stats then you decide your race, class, background etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Why I Am Starting to Prefer 4d6 Drop the Lowest Over the Default Array.

Ha. I like the 4d6 method as I like random low stats. I've found that what a character is bad at can help define them better for roleplaying purposes. I remember with fondness the Dwarven Fighter named Creasote who had 6 dex. In one game he became trapped by zombies, so held his knife in his...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

That seems totally fair to me. The players used their brains and their characters abilities to avoid having to slog through the fire node, battling all the way. Now they have everyone after them, but that sort of tension is good for a game. I love it - they succeeded, but will they survive?

D&D 5E (2014) Transitioning from Lost Mine of Phandelver to Princes of the Apocalypse

Sounds perfect. Actually, it sounds better than the pre-written hooks. There are a couple of very good threads about PoTA hidden in the forum - including adventure journals, so reading and stealing ideas is good. The thread by Nebulous is probably the best one. My journal also starts with a...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse campaign recaps

We finished our PoTA game ages ago now and have been playing Numenera. I thoroughly recommend it, or possibly look at The Strange (which I have not played). The Cypher System (which both games use) is a nice change of pace after D&D and it works better as Theatre of the Mind. It's a lot less...

    D&D 5E (2014) Your favorite PC of all-time...

Jeroid Smith, blacksmith of a small village. He never went looking for trouble, but trouble often found him. He was not an adventurer, he just wanted a quiet life and to keep the villagers safe. He was fun.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll: When do you typically retire your PCs?

A number of different reasons over the last 36 years I've been playing - eeep. 1. The DM gets bored with the campaign (or the work involved) and stops 2. The story comes to its natural end 3. TPK 4. The campaign ends because the bad guys won. 5. People move away Any of those can happen at any...
