Do you think 6 months are enough for playtesting?

Thing is, 4th Edition is a new Game (although evolved out of 3rd edition), that was said often enough by WoC. Many new features were previewed in earlier products, that is correct. But joining all the different parts together to form a homogenous and solid system ist the difficult part. I think...

    New Playtest up...

I fervently hope that Warforged will not be a core race. Don't want tos tart a pro/contra warforged thread. I just find them to far removed from the standard fantasy scenarios. they also do not fit in a lot of campaign settings (FR or Greyhawk with Wraforged?). But, "panta rei" and all that, so...

Do you think 6 months are enough for playtesting?

We know exactely how large the playtest for 3rd ed was. Just have a look at the PHB. All playtesters are in the credits somewhere in the back of the Book.

Do you think 6 months are enough for playtesting?

What Piratecat said. It takes time to compile a playtest report and it takes time to read through this report and change things that need to be changed and send the new rules out to be playtested again. Piratecat, question for you: Did many mechanics change during playtesting 3rd ed.?

    Skills and Traps

That would be great. I hate it that the rogue simply uses 1 die roll and disarms the multipart magic/mechanic trap.

Too dang old! Or young.... Err....

Old starting ages also make no sense mechanically. Knowledge skills for example. Grasshair is more than 100 years old but has the same knowledge (arcana) as a Human wizard. Twinkleass has the same ranks in profession(daisycutter) as his half orc slave Thirdleg, even if he is in his job about...

A Lot of Things to Rememberize?

I guess design will go the way that PCs have access to some manuevers but will be able to get more out of them as they level up. As purely speculative example: maybe a 4th level Halbardier Fighter can trip 1 enemy as an action but a 14th level one can trip 5 enemies. Or a low level rogue can use...

Shouldn't we wait until passing judgement?

That my friend is exactely how I feel at the moment. It is almost like before Christmas. You are exited about the upcoming presents, worried that you won't get the presents you "ordered" from Santa (or as it is in Germany: from the Christkind). You try to get an early sneak peek at the presents...

    the "truth" about classes

For a new system about 8-10 base classes seem right to me. More would give you an option overload. Especially if the new classes will receive a new Feat/ability at each level. Just play the PHB base classes until you get bored. Then new Classes are added. Seems ok to from a business and gaming...

Do you think 6 months are enough for playtesting?

I must admit that I am very exited about what I hear of the 4th edition. But I do not think that 6 month playtests with external playtesters will be enough. Playtesting is not about playing new cool classes and running the game smothly. For me playtesting is about trying to wreck the system...

Too dang old! Or young.... Err....

Yeah, I am with you there. I always rule in my campaigns that the long lived humanoids reach adolescence at the same age like humans but then just stop aging or age only really slow.

Is Scott Rouse a REAL Person???

One Rouse to rule them all!
  13. Tharen the Damned

    Skills?

I do not think that it will work exactly like that in 4th. Again I point to Iron Heros (wdesigned by Mike Mearls) where skills were grouped together. An Athletics group inclueds Jump, Climb and Swim for example. You just spend skill points on this group and not on individual skill. But you still...

Well, if that is not cited from The Usual Suspects I am an old green Dragon. Keep it coming!

Complete Disagreement With Mike on Monsters (see post #205)

Sure, in most Cases the Monster lives 2-5 rounds and will not use any Skills. But sometimes PCs will try to talk to a Monster or vice versa. Maybe the PCs want to Bluff their way pas a Monster. Or the Monster becomes a follower/henchman/companion of the party (for example in Monte Cooks Campaign...

    Design & Dev: Monsters (DRAGONS!)

I think that it is a good idea that Badass Monster receive a lot of actions. What bothered me in 3x a little was that even the mightiest Demonlord only had his ONE full round action while Players had one Full round action each (disregarding spells that give you extra actions). Maybe in 4ed the...

    Design & Dev: Monsters (DRAGONS!)

I thought about the possible removal of iterative attacks and the High AC of the Dragon. Mechanically it fits: Iterative attack bonusses got worse after the first. So the chance to hit with your second, thrid etc. attack got smaller. But you had the chance of dealing more damage. If you change...
