When you added in replacement first level PCs, the others protected them in combat, and when the gold was brought into town we always gave them all (or max they could get XP from) so they leveled up really fast. Often the party was only adventuring enough to get them to the next level. Also...

The poor Thief was so screwed in BECMI, with the skills progression table ridiculously stretched out over 36 levels. To add insult, their XP requirement per name level was higher than all but the MU.

Nah in AD&D DMG Gygax talks about how 3d6 gives poor results, doesn't mention in order. Nothing is mentioned about how to roll at all in PHB.

Yeah it didn't even mention the 'in order' bit just using 3d6. I came to AD&D via BECMI so used 3d6 in order, then cheat like hell to get a decent character

Ah, I've missed that. They are four alternatives but they are recommended alternatives. Gygax is saying don't use 3d6 in order because the bit before you quoted says "it is recommended that the following systems be used. Four alternatives..." Emphasise mine. So 3d6 in order is the known default...

Most of the pre built PCs and also NPCs had super high scores. I've heard it that to survive to higher levels they had to have those great rolls, the crap abilities ones died 🤣
