    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Have A Thread of Veteran GM Advice

Maps are graphical representations of an area - not the area itself. I don't think I've met a player yet who has complained its unrealistic that the map isn't a perfect representation. After all, that is a general feature of maps, whether real or fantasy. Not having a map works fine for very...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Have A Thread of Veteran GM Advice

The player in my current group who knew how to map unfortunately moved far away. The other players seem unable to map, and I'm not sure how to teach them, having tried multiple approaches, each of them giving up in turn. For example, I'll describe one room something like this: "To make it...

D&D General Demetrios1453 Plays the Gold Box Games

I took a similar approach. I also added stuff where I found content lacking and remodeled areas, like reworking the incredibly mazy pyramid on Sorcerer's Isle, and abstracted navigating the hedge maze.

What is your favorite RPG book of all time?

Probably the Mentzer Basic red box for the incredible Elmore art and smooth introduction to the game, or the 3E PHB for the evocative layout design, Da Vinci style sketches and bold approach to a new edition.

D&D General Demetrios1453 Plays the Gold Box Games

I derive much enjoyment from the fancy fireworks resulting from the deaths of enchanted draconians.

D&D General Demetrios1453 Plays the Gold Box Games

I drew a few maps for when I ran Ruins of Adventure. And used Worldographer to make a hexmap for the wilderness.

    Drawing maps is very hard.

D&D General Demetrios1453 Plays the Gold Box Games

I played through Champions of Krynn, Death Knights of Krynn and The Dark Queen of Krynn a couple of years ago. I didn't max my PCs' stats, but I re-rolled until they had an 18 in their primary stat. The only real issues I had were having to retry a battle against a death knight in Death Knights...

    Pathfinder 2E Essential PF2ER Elements

Some things I'm already doing for monsters is to make sure they have a simple action to get rid of 1 AP (like Raise Shield) or ensure they have a 2 AP action they can nearly always use (some of the warrior feats are a good inspiration for brutes). I also simplify poison and disease. For monsters...

    Pathfinder 2E Essential PF2ER Elements

Off the top of my head: 1. Remove skill feats. Bake essential feats into the skill itself (Medicine mainly relevant here). 2. Remove backgrounds as a rules mechanism. 3. Identify main "builds" for each class, perhaps using the "build examples" from each class. Remove the main class and instead...

D&D General What are the “boring bits” to you?

I was equally taken aback by this unsolicited display of savagery.

has anyone seen any good non-headline movies?

From the last few years, I particularly liked Pearl (2022), Glass Onion(2022), Evil Dead Rise (2023) and The Last Duel (2021).

D&D General Who “owns” a PC after the player stops using them?

My general approach is that if a player leaves the game and still has a living PC, to ask the player what the PC's plans are. If I have a group in a location where the former PC might be, and I have an idea for how the former PC could contribute to the experience, I will contact the player and...

D&D General What are the “boring bits” to you?

I’m in two minds about that. On the one hand, rolling dice is fun. On the other hand it makes magic feel different that my victims are now responsible for surviving my attack. I also prefer attempting to save to just being told I was disintegrated.

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Monster Core

It's unsatisfactory to discover a creature's weaknesses based on die rolls anyway. It's more interesting by uncovering it through exploration (perhaps its maker left a book somewhere) or by asking relevant NPCs.

D&D General What are the “boring bits” to you?

Crafting, complex character building and players taking long turns in combat.

    Pathfinder 2E Pathfinder Monster Core

Top 3 things I'd like to know: 1. Which creatures from the Bestiary, if any, do not appear in Monster Core? 2. Which creatures, if any, not in the Bestiary, have been added to Monster Core? 3. Which creatures have been significantly changed, if any? Based on the overview, it sounds like it's...

Should a TTRPG have a singular Core Rulebook or more?

If it’s not a super light system, and it is a D&D style system with the classic separation of players and a GM, there should be at least 2 books. One for rules the players need to know, like the purpose of stats, classes, character generation, spell descriptions, equipment and the basic...

RPG Writing and Design Needs a Paradigm Shift
